What are the odds that my new 16-50 will be a good copy

I ordered a 16-50 from B&H on Wedensday, It's sitting at home waiting for me.

I'm a little skeptical that the first one will be good. I just couldn't help myself, I am a little short on the 16-28 range at 2.8

If you go by all the reviews I think I have about a 65% chance of getting a good one first time.

I will know in about 3 hours.

Keep in mind that people with negative experiences are much more likely to post evaluations (people with positive experiences tend to just use the thing and not worry about telling others). So, I'm sure your odds are considerably higher than that.

I should have bought this lens a month ago

Now becuse I am so impaitent I will have two at the same time. B&H is closed until tomorrow so I ordered one from Amazon and it will be here Monday. My wife will probably be handing one to the UPS driver when he drops off the new one.

I hope I don't need to purchase a third one. Wish me luck

What was the problem with the first one? I had to adjust for front focus on mine, but after that it has been just great. I use it about 90% of the time now, only switching when I need longer or faster, which isn't that often.

Corner sharpness

Newspaper test. The center two thirds of the picture is spot on its the out side edges/corners that are the issue, the top left corner or so is so blurry its unreadable the bottom right corner was better but not good the other two corners were some where in between. this was from 2.8,4, 5.6, 8 to f11 at 16mm, 30mm, and 50mm.

This was done on a tripod with a remote and 2 sec timer set.

checked for squareness to the wall.

My 18-250 performed better at the same available apatures and focal lengths.

The odds improve greatly if you try twice

All though not perfect the second lens is much much better. The Lower right corner seems to be the trouble maker on the second lens.

Sorry I haven't posted any of the test results as of yet, life has been getting in the way.

testing was very informal just a newspaper shot at various ap's and focal ranges, simple and to the point and if your happy with the results no more testing required. This is not something I would normally do, but for this lens I'm glad I did.

I will post on flickr shortly after the first if your interested

What camera do you use? I was very unimpressed with my 16-50 on my K10D, but it became a much better lens on my K20D. Purple fringing was non-existent, and focusing seemed much better.

I have both a k10 & k20, I actually use the k10 more then I do the k20. I shoot a lot of pictures for work and the quality of the k10 is more then adaquate for this and it is a really dirty enviroment, just can't justify taking the K20 to work.

The 18-250 is on my K10 always, the 16-50 has not meet the K10 as of yet.

I have been working so many damn hours lately, I havn't had any time to take pictures out side of work. 400 hrs in 28 days

skinja,
you are going down the same path I did. I stopped after the 3rd try. Tamron 17-50 is a much better lens in terms of sharpness. Even wide open. I have two entire threads on my experiences with these lenses.
