Is there any planned 28-75mm (+/-) f/2.8 lens from Pentax ?

I have the Tamron 28-75/2.8 lens, and I really wish its focus would be faster..

Do you know if Pentax is planning on making a fast 28-75mm range lens, with a SDM focus system, probably for the DA* series...?

The currently existing lenses are not good for me..
DA Star 16-50mm is not long enough,
DA Star 50-135mm is not wide enough...

I know I "can" just get both, but this is not really practical..

Pentax's policy has been to release APS-C lenses that are the same length as their old lenses, adjusted for the crop factor. Therefore, they release an DA* 55 f1.4 instead of an 85 mm f1.4. As far as the 28-75, that is supposed to be covered by the DA* 16-50 f2.8.

Weird policy, given that the competitors does have 28-75mm range lenses for APS-C, and also 3rd-party lenses (Tamron/Sigma etc') have this too, also for Pentax.

oh well....
Thanks for the clarification

The Tamron and Sigma 28-75 lenses I believe are full frame compatible. I don't know what the story is on "the competitors" but I'm assuming since Nikon and Canon both have full frame sensor digital cameras that's the reason their 28-75 lenses are still in production.

To me with the crop factor 28-75 isn't all that useful of a focal range, though lots of people love the Tamron 28-75.
I'd rather a have it a little wider at the wide end, choices there are the 16-45 or 16-50, or even the 17-70.

The competitors do have FF bodies where 28-75 range makes a lot more sense than on a APS-C body.

yet, Tamron released their 28-75/2.8 lens for Pentax mount, and it IS a pretty popular lens by all means.

And you can use that lens on a FF FILM Pentax body and it will work. You need to consider the FOV when looking at 3rd party lenses. I have yet to see any of the 3rd party manufacturers (with the exception of Tokina of course) release lenses that take the APS-C FOV into account. As a lens manufacturer it makes no sense to produce two lines that are equivalent. Pentax can do it because they have stated that they are committed to the APS-C format.

.

SDM wouldn't necessarily make it focus any faster.

Then let me put it this way: if you see a Pentax lens appear in the 28-75 range, then you'll know their FF is right around the corner.
And since Pentax stated they are committed only to APS-C and MF, don't hold your breath .

I never thought my DA*50-135mm focused any faster than my Tamron 28-75mm, even before the SDM motor started to act erratically.

28-75 is my favorite lens and I'm wondering if K20 with 1.03 firmware will focus it much faster than K100D... What camera are you using with it Encoder?
