DA* 50-135mm question to owners

Hello everyone.

I have recently obtained a copy of Pentax DA* 50-135mm/f2.8 lens at a sale at Ritz Camera. I was just cleaning the rubber on the focusing ring on the lens the other day, when I noticed that there was some dark brown/black tape underneath where the digits for the focusing milimeters are ( between 90 and 50mm).

I was just wondering if that is normal, or if I got a refurbished lens ( although it was sold as new). Please, if you own this lens help me figure it out.

Sincerely,
Radkapatka

Haven't seen anything like that on my copy but I'll double check after work.

It's UNDERNEATH the rubber? You mean you can pull that back on yours? That in itself seems a bit disturbing. The rubber on the both rings on my copy is firmly attached.

I second that. There's definately something wrong. Maybe Pentax will replace it for you.

I just pulled the rubber back and there it is the black tape you are speaking of. The rubber is not firmly attached.

thank you for confirming that PDO. Anyone else can confirm that it is there and normal. I guess people are just afraid to check on their lenses.

Regards,
Radkapatka

P.s. PDO, how long have you had yours for and is it from Ritz Camera?

This is interesting.
I cannot even lift that rubber. Mine is like glued to the lens.
How in the world did you take it off?

You just have to get it by the edge and flip it over. See the picture posted earlier.

I tried to pull the edge of the rubber ring but it is very tight and I am afraid to force it. I could not possibly do it with my bare fingers. I am totally baffled why would you even attempt to peel it and how did you managed to do that? Did you use pliers? If it was so easy for you to do it, I suspect something is wrong with the lens.
