I got an SMC Pentax-M 50mm f 1.4 today.

I just got an SMC Pentax-M 50mm f 1.4 today. In great shape... see pics below.

Problem was... I couldn't get it to work on my Pentax K10D?
I tried the Manual focus w/manual setting on the dial and all I'm seeing on the top LCD is a blinking F - - ?
Then I read page 35 and 210

p35: Lists custom menu options, including the option to allow the camera to release when the lens is not on "A" or has no "A"

p210: Lists the metering options for various classes of lenses, provided the custom option to allow shooting when the aperture ring is not on "A" has been properly set.

Here is the first photo I took with the 50mm. Still have to learn the settings.

What kind of lighting situations would the M 50mm f 1.4 be best suited for over the standard 18-55mm zoom lens I have now?

The 50mm would be nice for low light, and when you want to create bokeh shots.

Prime is nice in general because you have to work harder to create the picture, so usually it's more refined than when using zooms.

AFAIK the f-- is normal and you change aperture using the aperture ring. Everytime you want to shoot, press the green button in M mode so and the shutter speed will be set for you.

There is basically no situation where the 18-55 will outperform the 50. The only question is, in which situations will the 18-55 do well enough that you will choose it for the convenience of zoom, AF, & autoexposue rather than the 50. Basically, if you don't need to be shooting wider than f/8, there is little reaosn to prefer the 50 - it's advantage will be relatively minimal. But at f/5.6, the 50 will smoke the kit lens, and the kit lens can't go wider than that at all at 50mm.
