Which 400mm f2.8 prime? Tamron or Tokina?

There is a 400mm Tokina in the marketplace at the moment. I had been considering the Tamron 400mm as my next purchase for the sports photography I have been doing, but now I am torn. I have also considered the Pentax and Sigma lenses at this focal length, but they are f4 and f5.6 respectively and I really want the fastest lens I can find to accomodate a teleconverter if necessary.

Can anyone weigh in and help me with this decision? Much obliged!

don't you mean 300mm F2.8?

I have been looking at the same thing, but for me it is a means to 500mm F4.5.

I saw the tokina, know where there is a tamron, both of which I have my doubts on with respect to CA, and then there is the old SMC 500 F4.5

the 300mm have an advantage that I can use my 1.7x AF TC and all the metering functions of the K10D

The SLR/Lens market has contracted sufficiently since the busy times of the 1980s that some current Tamron and Tokina lenses of the same specification may, in fact, be the same lens. Old competitors have become partners as volume as fallen.

Your title is quite missleading- I believe there are no 400/2.8 from the companies you mention.
You will see that shopping for long lenses (400mm +) for Pentax can be quite frustrating, there is not a big selection and nearly all currently available are from Sigma. Maybe you should consider buying a cheap used body from another brand and a nice lens for that.

My bad, I meant 300mm, not 400mm

Sorry, I was mistaken when I started this thread. I meant to type 300mm, not 400mm!

Their FA* 400 was a F5.6. They did have a A* 400 F2.8 and both a K & M 400mm F5.6.

This page lists all their extreme telephotos.
