The 58/1.9 is a legend. It is what the Russian 58/2 tried to knock off.

Sorry to revive old thread but it's not. The Helios 44 (58/2) is a copy of Zeiss Biotar 58/2, which, if you look at the optical schemes, is very similar to Primoplan, but not the same.

Ah, this thread gets bumped every few months or years. I just updated my comment #6 above, still vaguely on-topic.

But a topical question arises: Why 58mm? Back in film days, when dinosaurs ruled the land and proto-hominids nibbled furtively on pterodactyl eggs, 50-55-58mm lenses were all fairly common. I've even had some lenses marked 51-52-53mm. But why 58mm and not 60mm? (I have just one weird 60mm lens, a perspective-control projector lens from Schneider.) And with available tolerances, wouldn't some 58s actually be 60s? I've read that the FA50/1.4 actually measures to 52/1.5. How many Primoplan 58/1.9s are really 61/2.2s?
