That's a tough one, but I think the 43 is a stellar lens. I don't have the K55 though, so can't compare directly, but I was using both an FA 50 1.7 and the 43 and I opted to keep the 43 even though the 50 was a stellar performer. Something about the whole image I just like better.

Another question to ask yourself: Will you get yet another one a few months from now when you miss it?

well 43 image has some issues or your lens has some issues... as no way it should be so poor... while 55 looks as it should be...

time to check that 43 out, as not all lenses of the same model were created the same...

Make sure your FA 43mm does not backfocus or front focus. At f/4 this lens is one of the sharpest lenses ever tested at photozone.de.

A quote from photozone.de: The situation is completely different at f/2.8 where both resolution and contrast are extremely high. The peak quality is reached at f/4 with an outstanding center and border quality - surely a reference quality to be beaten on the K10D. Beyond f/4 diffraction slowly takes its toll.

Same distance and cropped, or did you inch the tripod up for the 43?

n/m, answered my own question through reading comprehension. I'd be more interested in not an identical crop result, but an identical percentage crop.

Hi!

When you write "same field of view", does that mean you had to crop the 43 more than the 55?

btw: if the 55 is hte bottom of these two I really have to pull it out of my closet!!

I own the K55, great lens, very sharp at f1.8, For the price of the K55, under $80, it's worth every cents of it. The k55 also has nice rich color that's similar to the FA 77mm. I prefer the K55 over the FA50mm 1.4, M50mm 1.4 at wide open. Never compare it at F8, but from the your pics, the K55 pic has better and richer color.

I'm not surprised either. Makes me want to start looking for some more K series glass.

a picture K55 at f2.0

Hi!

just tested one picture today to see almost wide open (did not test wide open). the half step down looks almost wide open, would guess not very much more than f2...

focus on center of flower, taken at closest focusing distance 0,45m.

100% crop:

No surprise the K55/1.8 won either, I’ve had one for years and love it. It’s the perfect prime at a reasonable cost.

I bet if the same tests were done with your film camera the two results would be better than with your digital!

My testing suggestions: look at the corners. Even though your camera is not seeing the "full-frame" corners, there is still considerable variation in corners vs. center sharpness in the APS-C format corners. I would expect the FA43 to be better here too. It isn't easy to compare different focal lengths for sharpness anyway. Not resizing is an obvious clue, resizing can penalize one lens.

I haven't used the FA43 but I would expect it to "win" at wide apertures. My K55/1.8 behaves like the opinions on this site:

Stan's Pentax Photography

In other words, not that sharp wide open, transitioning to sharp right around where you tested. The old resolution tests around have similar results.

The FA43 designers probably paid much more attention to bokeh. Whether they achieved "better" bokeh is going to be a matter of opinion. They had more aperture blades to work with.

Another testing suggestion is to repeat a sharpness test several times to make sure you don't have focus errors. I was very confident in my focus technique until I started doing this.

Well this resolution test says otherwise. If anything the K55 is better than the 43 wide open.

And bokeh of the 55/1.8 is top notch.

I guess we have case of reasonable doubt here...

the 55 is actually well known for this aspect. wide open is where most people would agree that the 55 really shines. and given pretty much all quality lenses get razor sharp when stopped down even just a little, the 55 is among the best for normal lenses in the pentax lineup. having said that (and owning 5 55's) I have always wanted an FA 43.
