need help on telconverter

Hey folks, I will be going to British Columbia this summer and would like more range. I have a Da* 50-135 and would like to extend with teleconverter or I will have to add another lens with more reach. The teleconverter issue is a little confusing as to which will work and how well. Can you use other brands with the autofocus Pentax?
Any advice will be appreciated

Thanks Golfing Rob

There is a post in the lens forum that has a list of all the TCs that work with the DA* lenses. I don't have the URL off the top of my head but if you search the forum for teleconverter you will probably find it pretty quickly.

If you search and can't find it reply back and I'm sure someone will be able to link it for you.

The Kenko Pz-AF 1.5X Teleplus SHQ will autofocus (DG is printed in gold letters on it). Since there are a couple of Kenkos out there, be sure that you get the this one. The others, reportedly, will not autofocus on the 50-135mm

I don't know about Kenko or other TC's, but I used the Pentax AF 1.7X adapter on my DA 50-135 and obtained ordinary results. The 1.7X works very well with my DA* 200 though.

Here is the most recent list of TCs that work and don't with DA* lenses:

That is from the https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/55097-teleconv...da-lenses.html thread

Given that a TC steals a stop or more of light as well as some amount of IQ, my gut feel is that adding a TC to the this lens would turn an excellent in fast 50-135 into a rather ordinary 70-200 or 100-270, and that you'd really be better off just getting the DA55-300 (which would be significantly smaller & lighter to boot) unless you expected to really need the f/2.8 capability as well in those focal lengths on this trip. But even then, you might be better off just adding a prime (perhaps a cheap MF one).
