It would begin to matter in low light.

Because f/5.6 is too slow when you're trying to bounce flash off of a 40 foot black ceiling and you'd rather not have to shoot at ISO3200 WITH flash

Not everyone shoots at f/11

That said, if you need a wide angle NOW, the current 10-20 is a great lens. I had it when I shot Pentax and when I switched to Canon, it was one of the first lenses I HAD to buy

There must be some good reason to update current 10-20mm. I assume better IQ. That's good enough reason to me to sell the f4-5.6 and buy the f3.5.

Well, the new Sigma is going to give better sunstars. It has uneven number of aperture blades vs. current 10-20mm's 6x. Major reason for updating.

I also don't agree that the 12-24 is as 'bad' as the mag makes it out to be. Certainly the Photozone tests don't give it full marks (mainly because of its CA and PF), but otherwise it's a definite keeper of a lens. It's easy to point out all those reviews putting the 12-24 down for its shortcomings, but the good reviews (and results, even on this forum) far outweigh the bad.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 12-24 - it's a winner IMO, and certainly a wide-angle contender with the rest of them.

They did not really explain in the test why it was the worst optically and also stated that they tested all lenses on a 12mp body. So - either they used an adapter or were sloppy in their discription of the test. (The Pentax crop looked better than several of the others) I actually picked up that mag for the first time a couple days ago and was not impressed. They stated that the Fuji f200fd had better IQ and detail than the lx3 and had a big Fuji f200fd add on the back cover. I do have the sigma 10-20 and love it but from what I have seen the Pentax is much more consistent corner to corner.

The May issue of Digital Photo tested 12 current wide angle zooms and the Sigma was rated the best (the older F stop one, not the just coming out 3.5) and the Pentax ranked the worst and actually was dead last. It showed pics with some bad fringing and softness at f4, and this internet review also shows CA is a little too high for my liking on the Pentax:

Pentax DA 12-24mm f/4 AL ED [IF] - Review / Test Report

There's also someone with a review on BandH about the horrible CA/purple fringing of this lens.
Pentax | SMCP-DA 12-24mm f/4 ED AL Autofocus Lens | 21577 | B&H

I would definitely go with the Sigma, and even the current one as it will be cheaper than the new f3.5. Both should be cheaper than the Pentax, and from what I've seen, better IQ.

My only complaint about the current Sigma 10-20 is that it is very prone to lens flare. if they fix this part of it, it will be a huge + but really other than that, no problem. I fixed the lens flare issue by having a polarizer on while out in the sun.

Yep, nearly every owner loves it, including me. No reason not to get a Sigma, though.

Sniff...I just took the first step to moving to the Pentax & the K-7 when it's released...I just sold my much loved 10-20mm. I am gonna miss that thing!!

BUT, looks like there will be a new toy to take her place pretty soon.

Another thing to bear in mind is that whilst exploiting Pentax's invaluable K10D/K20D/K-7 Shake Reduction facility, I get plenty of opportunities to take amazing hand-held interior architectural photographs with Sigma's astonishing 10-20mm super-wide zoom lens. This simply isn't feasible in the case of either C***n or N***n DSLR's, due to the lack of a suitable IS/VR stabilised version of Sigma's 10-20mm.
In fact I was initially quite sceptical whether interior hand-held shots would be a realistic possibility in those frustrating circumstances where either tripods or flash photography are officially prohibited, but nowadays such worries are of little concern and I can happily keep shooting hand-held, where others either have to give up or suffer with inevitably blurred results.

Best regards
Richard

I went out to a Chalk fesival in Pasadena today and took one lens. My Sigma 10-20mm and reminded myself of why I love this lens so much.
All at F/8 and hyperfocal. exif intact.

I agree J--which polarizer does the trick for you? Thanks.
