Sigma 30/1.4 MF smoothness

How good is your sigma at MF? Mine sometimes seems to have some kind of unhealthy drag or friction at close distances (0.5..3m). Other times it is even trough all the focusing range having just the sounds/clicking of gears free.
Have you experienced anything similar? Could this affect auto focus as well?

Don't think my 30 mm has the same issue, allthough I hardly ever use MF.

I don't have this issue, but MF on the 30 leaves a lot to be desired. Not well dampened, sound of gears, etc.

It seems that i've stumbled upon some bad 30'. First the back focus issues on k100d, now the often inability to lock correctly or at all on k200d and this MF thing. And the 70-300 ain't no better in some aspects. I'll better get rid of them both if i can and stay away from Sigma stuff.

Why so many issues with so expensive (compared to cheap and reliable stuff) equipment.

Seems to be a luck of the draw sort of thing. Or lack there of I suppose.

I have a Sigma 10-20 EX f4-5.6, 24-60 EX f2.8, and a 30 EX f1.4.
The 24-60 had to be sent in to sort out a back focus issue, but the others were great right out of the box. All 3 of them now take fantastic photos when mounted on my K200, with great image quality.

Sigma often gets a bad rap due to lousy QC. It really is a luck of the draw. Get a good copy, and you've got a great lens (usually not Limited or * quality, but not far behind on the EX models), but if you're one of the many who get a bum copy, it can be a real pain.
