Help buying brand new Jupiter-9, anyone got one recently manufactured?

I'm looking to buy a new MC Jupiter-9 but I don't know which distributors to trust not only on service but actually getting a lens that's recently manufactured and not old stock. If LZOS is still making them, then in theory, there should be 2008 and 2009 dated copies somewhere out there. Anyone got one thats at least made in the 2000s? If so, what do the post 2000 serial numbers look like?

I'm tempted to order direct from LZOS unless I can find another dealer thats simpler to deal with. Anyone order from LZOS direct recently? How did it go?

try here

Night Vision Goggles, Rifle Scopes, Binoculars, Cameras, Lenses, Spotting Scopes, Magnifiers

but if you are looking for an intersting 85mm, you might also want to try the samyang (aka vivitar, bower et. al) F1.4

I bought mine in spring of 2008 from rugift.com and it was made in 2007.

I wish I could recommend rugift without reservations, but I can't. I have purchased twice from them and am unlikely to in the future. The short story is that it takes forever for them to fulfill an order and they are reticent to provide tracking information or even a shipping date.

There are also some issues related to packing. My J-9 was packed loose in the box with no caps and no padding other than a bunch of crunched up Moscow newspapers. The "jewel" case that would have provided some protection was also in the box, but the lens was not inside it. Go figure...

If I were to do it again, I would order direct from LZOS and take my chances with them. (Better prices too...)

Steve

P.S. The first to digits of the serial number is the year of manufacture. Example: 07xxxxxxxx is made in 2007. A new Jupiter-9 will also come with a little booklet that contains the final inspection stamp with the month/year of manufacture in Russian.

Lowell,
Do you by any chance have one of those? And if you do can you tel me if it's a Manual focus lens, or Auto focus?
Thanks in advance.

Concerning the new Samyang/Rokinon/etc 85/1.4; they are manual focus only. They do have auto aperture so thats nice. However, they do not have any electronics for data.

Hmm. I think I might try LZOS direct as well. Also, does your 2007 model have any differences you can tell from the ~80s-90s models going around?

Thanks shaocaholica,
Then they might be perfect for what I need. Although screwmount or t-mount would be easier in this case.

Here are some pictures of mine (from the review on this site):

There are subtle differences between the different black versions in M42 mount, but the recent variants are all labeled MC (Multi-Coated) and have the focus, aperture, and preset ring styled the same as mine.

So a new lens from LZOS is currently US$229 shipped. A bit steep compared to used prices but it will get you some peace of mind that it will be really new (hopefully 2008-2009) and they are good with shipping. I think I'll do it in a few weeks when I get back from vacation. If anyone else feels up to it, be my guest and tell us all about it.

Stu

the lens comes (to my knowledge) in both K and KA mounts, KA mounts seem to be $50 more but well worth having. That was one reason I ultimately went this route as opposed to the Jupiter - 9. the extra stop does not hurt either.

Mine (and the one used for the poppy shot) is a KA mount bouthg at B&H

It is the MC version. Sorry, I don't have a full, face-on shot. I should probably add one to the review.

Wow, the prices continue to climb though $229 shipped is still cheaper than the price at kremlinoptics (~280 shipped) or rugift (also $280). A couple of months ago LZOS was selling for about $180 shipped. Even that seems high compared to the $130 new, I paid last year.
