Is the Pentax-F 50mm 2.8 macro basically the same as the FA 50mm 2.8 macro?

I am just wondering, sinces the FA is very expensive and I saw one F sold for only £170 on ebay.

Well, according to Bojidar Dimitrov's page they are identical optically, only the outside is different. I have the FA50 myself and it's such a sharp lens, I can highly recommend it. So you canít go wrong with either version IMO.

Agreed. In fact, I think that the F/FA 50/2.8 Macro twins are easily the sharpest 50mm macro lenses ever made. (Nonetheless, my only remaining 50mm macro is the A 50/2.8 Macro, which is just slightly less sharp but ever ~so~ much more fun to use.)

The only difference between the F and the FA is that the FA has the Clamp button for macro use while manaul. The F does not have this feature. Optically both of them are identical.

Does anybody know if there were any changes between the F and FA lenses optically? It seems that it was the lens casing that changed on lenses that spanned these two series.

BTW, whenever somebody mentions macro lenses I get just this little pang of jealousy! My LBA only extends to sub $100 lenses but it surfaces when somebody uses that word..

Agreed to all comments before. Dimitrov says the FA has a better manualfocus feel, F 50/2.8 Macro and maybe that's why fwcetus says his A-version is much more fun to use cause its manual focus is much easier to use.

I would like to know: How are those macro lenses you are talking about at infinity ? In other words: Any recommendations for a good allround 50ish macro ?

Thanks, Georg

Well I have owned the DFA, FA and A versions of the 50mm macro and they are all different in optical construction. The FA is a remake of the earlier F version with a focus clamp added. Typical of F series lenses the focusing ring for the F version is a narrow hard plastic ring with little resistance when focusing manually. The FA version is better in this regard. Of course the A version offers the best feel when focusing manually, but I do find the DFA version the quickest to use because of Quick Shift.

Optically I'd rate in my order of preference:
FA/F
DFA
A

For an affordable macro lens, the old manual focus Sigma 50mm f/2.8 is really pretty good optically.
