Just got my Helios-44K-4!

God, what a beauty of a lens. Took it out for a lunchtime walkabout and got some gorgeous shots. Can't really tell for sure until I process them, but it looks to be quite sharp at f/2 as well. Might be saying bye to my 44M if the IQ is as good as it seems.

Consider this a placeholder thread till I get home tonight and get the shots uploaded.

Oh my goodness...

I did not think it could be that much better than my 44M... I cant wait for the pics...

I should start hunting now!

Ps I consider this "placeholder thread" a taunt! hehe

I need specifics on what you prefer about it over the 44M... it has been two months since I bought a lens, this could be the end of my 'on hold' status

PSs what is the K in 44K? k-mount? Or typing error?

Wait a minute here -- do you mean to tell us that you proudly updated your signature listing your new-to-you lens before you even processed photos?!?!?!

Let's face it, it was a pretty sure thing.

Some shots at f/4. No sharpening. Contrast/white balance adjustment in LR2:

f/2 shots on their way!

Congrats! It's a great lens. I would never part with my copy. Only gripe is that the focus ring is a bit tight, esp. in the close range.

Yeah, I did notice that.

Also, the aperture ring seems to go about 1/2 stop past f/2, though since it's already wide open this doesn't really do anything. Those are my only complaints about the build.

I guess the 44K-4 has a 6-bladed construction like the 44M-4, whereas the 44M has an 8-bladed construction. Not sure exactly what effect this has on the IQ.

So, Gus, to conclude...

What I like about the 44K-4 over the 44M (after one day of use):

K-mount over M42 (convenience)
No A/M switch—full auto (convenience)
More "interesting" bokeh at f/2
Seems somewhat sharper overall (remarkable since the 44M is very sharp already)
Generally better build quality (this is subjective, though)

What I dislike so far:

Focusing ring seems a bit stiff

It's a winner.
