I think there is a clear distinction between 50s and 55s and 58s and macros. Otherwise I would have thirteen or so of the same lens, obviously not true.

I have been struggling with this for a month or two now, too. I have:

DA40
SMC Tak 50/1.4
Macro Tak 50/4
M 50/1.7
Macro M 50/4
A 50/1.7
A 50/1.4
Vivitar macro 55/2.8
Mamiya (m42) 58/1.7

And I know I do not need them all, but couldn't decide which way to go. I did sell my Sears 55mm/2.8 macro, so moving in the right direction. Then it hit me - buy a new lens! So now I have ordered a FA 50/2.8 macro. If that lens is as good as most people think, I can move out my other 3 macros, and still have 1:1, f/2.8 and SMC all in one. Love it! So then I'll decide between the M and A 1.7, and the 2 1.4's, and be down to a reasonable number.

50mm / f:4 SMC Macro M42
50mm / f:1.4 K-Mount 52mm filter
50mm / f:1.4 K-Mount M
50mm / f:1.7 K-Mount M
50mm / f:2 K-Mount A
55mm / f:1.8 K-Mount 52mm filter

Some weren't planned, just came on the bodies I purchased.

I'm looking for arguments on how many and what 50mm lenses you really need in your bag. I went on a lens buying binge a while back, and when I looked in the cabinet recently I realized I have way too many 50mm.

If you had those lenses, which would you keep and why?

I don't understand the question.....they keep "showing up" in packages at my house.......but do you mean one can get "rid" of lenses? I don't know if I like that option. I'm sure those types of lenses must be very expensive. :ugh:

I know the As arguably outperform the Ms, but I like the build quality of the Ms more.....better yet, you should really have matching Ks.....have you picked those up yet?

using old glass one will find that each lens has a very distinct character.
..can't have too many 50s, they are great optically and cheap, I so far have 9

Heh. More 50's is not what I need right now

How does the sharpness of the M 50 1.4 @ 1.7 compare to the A and F 1.7 @ 1.7? I guess I could test it myself, but this is easier

Most likely I'll end up getting rid of the duplicate M 1.4 and A 1.7 as well as the M 1.7. Then I'll see how I feel about the manual focus of the F 1.7 compared to the A 1.7 before I decide whether I keep the other A 1.7.

Now I just need to figure out what I want the most... A wide zoom, a fast tele zoom or a k20d...

You guys really should stop hoarding all the M42 glass.

I can't help the OP, I don't have any duplicates, except for across mounts. Then I've got a M50 f/2, Canon FD 50 f/1.8, EOS 50 f/1.8.

I also seem to accumulate standard lenses. I currently have:

(KAF)
Pentax FA 50mm F1.4

(M42)
Super-Tak 55mm F2
Cosinon 50mm F1.8
Pentacon 50mm F1.8
Helios-44-2 58mm F2
Helios-44-M 58mm F2

(FD)
Canon FD 50mm F1.8

The FA50 is my favourite, and I use the Cosinon with extension tubes a lot.
So I guess that would be two for me. The Super-Takumar is just as sharp, but it needs repairing as the aperture slips slightly during focusing.

The others are not as good, but they have their quirky charms, and I still like experimenting with them on occasion - so I wouldn't get rid of them.

Actually, rethinking my opinion, I'd say all you need is one...
The sharpest, fastest, most solid one you can afford!
Which one that is seems to be the subject of endless debate.

Otherwise, be a sentimental collector, like a lot of us seem to be. Reading this thread I can see It's all down to personal preference.

I reckon, simple as I am, that you only need one. That's why I've got two (told you I was simple ) A50/f1.2 and FA50/f1.4.

According to your profile, you still are using an Pentax *ist D. So, I would say the number you need is zero, and you need a K-7. I had one 50mm lens. Now I have zero, but a K-7 with my name on it is either nearly finished, or already finished.
My FA50 just didn't mix with my Limited pancakes. So, see ya!
