Well, you really only need one 50mm lens, but there are idiots like me who have 5:

A50mm f1.2
A50mm f1.4
FA50mm f1.4
FA50mm f2.8 macro
DA*55 f1.4

Surely a case in point for oversupply.

If I had to keep just one, it would probably be the DA*55 f1.4.

In order of preference, they would be:

DA*55 f1.4
FA50 f2.8 macro
A50mm f1.2
A50mm f1.4
FA50mm f1.4

The only reason I put the FA50mm f1.4 last is that I would still have an AF lens in the DA*55 and the FA50 f2.8 macro and would therefore like to keep the beautifully engineered A lens and for that lovely manual focus feel of the f1.2 and f1.4 versions.

I am feeling a little bit left out so here's my list:

Pentax-F 50mm f1.4 (just got it)
Pentax-FA 50mm f1.4
Pentax-M 50mm f1.4
Pentax-M 50mm f1.7
Pentax-M 50mm f2.0
Super Takumar 55mm f1.8

...recently sold my other copy of Pentax-M 50mm f1.7, and a stellar copy of Pentax-F 50mm f1.7 which I miss already.

The DA* 55mm is 3rd in line for lenses, probably some time next year. And then there are macros.

50s are simply addictive!

Here is my current 50/55mm stable, most of which came attached to various cameras:
  • Pentax-A 50/1.7
  • Pentax-M 50/1.7
  • XR Rikenon 50/2
  • XR Rikenon 50/2
  • Rikenon 50/1.7 (M42)
  • Sigma 50/2.8 EX DG Macro
  • Mamiya/Sekor 55/1.8 (M42)

Which would I not sell:
  • Pentax-M 50/1.7
  • Rikenon 50/1.7 (M42)
  • Mamiya/Sekor 55/1.8 (M42)

Which would I sell first:
  • Pentax-A 50/1.7

Which would I only sell if I had a better replacement:
  • Sigma 50/2.8 Macro (to be replaced by a Sigma 70/2.8 Macro or Tamron 90/2.8 Macro)

What am I currently jonesing for:
  • Pentax-K 50/1.4 -or- Pentax-K 55/1.8

What I would really like to have someday:
  • Voigtländer Nokton 58/1.4 -or- Zeiss Planar T* 50/1.4 (long live Cosina...)

What I would not pass up if I saw a good one used:
  • Helios 44K(M)-4 50/2

(Good thing I am not attracted to long glass...)

M 50 1.7 from my dad's K1000
M 50 4.0 macro from my dad's K1000
1958? Auto tak 55 1.8
Super takumar 55 2.0
Super takumar 50 1.4

Each lens has a different color. I don't really do any PP, so I just change the lens depending on the light. The 1.7, 1.4 and 2.0 have the colors that I like. The 1.8 is really clean, true colors and the macro doesn't get much use as I just picked up the F 100mm 3.5 off of craigslist. Think of each 50/55 as a favorite food. Sometimes you want pizza, sometimes chinese ....

I have a 50mm (the F f1.7) but think perhaps it's one too many. It's just about perfect for my daughter's basketball games, but aside from that, I never use it. I just don't feel a desire to shoot at that FL.

because they mock me...I am just waiting on my first Pentax and already I feel the mocking call of the bin of used lenses at the thrift shops. So I know the only way to silence their mocking is to buy them I already have terminal LBA? Does buying them actually help or should I find other ways to quiet those voices?

I have just two. One manual, one autofocus:

M 50 f1.4
F 50 f1.4

For a while I was under the impression I had the M 50 f1.7, until I actually saw 1.4 on the aperture ring the other day and was a little surprised.

I personally dislike 50mm range on DSLR. It's too specific for a walkabout. But I love photographs that isolate patterns in the background like these ones

vintage bikes on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
himawari on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I'm still trying to develop an eye for it, and when using the fifty I actually get shots of this nature.

That said because I think of fifty as a speciality lens (pattern isolator, low light, portrait) rather than an all-purpose, I only have a few:

Current used ones:
FA 50/1.4 (ZX-L's pair)
SMC Tak 50/1.4 (ME Super's pair)
M 40/2.8 (not a true fifty, new stealth lens, ME Super's mistress)
FA 35/2 (fifty on dslr, ZX-7 and K100D's pair)

What might be gone soon:
A 50/1.7 (mostly unused, soon gone for the trade with M 40)
Industar 50/3.5 pancake (stealth lens)
SMC Tak 35/3.5 (fifty on DSLR, this role has been replaced by FA 35 though. I might keep this lens for the ME super anyway)

Now 50mm on the Film bodies... or the FA 35 on digital is another story altogether. Definitely love the FOV!
My next 'fifty' will probably be the silver FA 43 to replace the FA 50. I just have to one day see a silver limited attached on my bodies

I usually have a Pentax 50mm around, mainly for when I sell or give away a body.

I stopped carrying a 50mm years ago. I never use one - IMO 35mm is "normal" for 35mm film.
Were I to go digital (Perish the thought! ) I might find a 50mm useful for portraits.

Even among the best there are subtle differences. I have one for extremely shallow DOF and one for all-around performance: a FA 50 1.4 (that I want to replace with a 1.2 lens); and an M 1.7 that starts off sharp and has great bokeh.

Also if you buy vintage SLRs you'll end up with enough 50mm F2's to build a fort with.

I have but two primes at 50mm.
One is M42 from my film days and the other one an A.
No plans to get the FA or DA* either (unless Pentax or Samsung does go FF).

Oh, and 3 zooms covering 50mm but that doesn't count, now does it.

They will be forced to go full frame, when FF DSLRs start selling for ~1500 USD (today's USD).

The answer would be maximum 2. 1 normal 1 macro.
If I have two lenses that cover the same fl then I know most of the time one of them will collect dust so I sell off when I buy new stuff. I sold my FA50 when I got the FA43 and I sold the FA35 when I got the FA31.

The right answer for me would probably be zero...but in reality I have more than I can count (I have enough fingers + toes, but it is the memory that's failing me), and rarely shoot them, usually preferring shorter or longer FL's, even if the glass is nearly always slower. Basically, they're generally serving as really-good-looking-but-kind-of-expensive body caps for film bodies (which I also have too many of). First to go (if any of them ever do) will be A50/2's because I can't think of any reason to choose them over f/1.7. At least the 1.7's are a little smaller & lighter than the f/1.4's.

If I was more disciplined I'd try to sell some of them off to fund a Voight 58. :-)
