DA50-200mm trounces F-1.7 50mm and Tamron 28-75mm?

Link here in case pictures don't show:

Crops from K100D hand-held shots at 50mm F4:

Tamron 28-75mm F2.8:

F-1.7 50mm:

DA50-200mm:

All shots done with auto-focus, on-board flash. I was shocked that the DA seems to outperform these other two lenses I assumed should be better because of their price and one being a prime at that too.

Maybe I got bad copy of the F50 and Tamron? Or is the DA really that much better? Or maybe my K100D has some front/back focus problem?

Joey

Try in bright daylight. I had a Tammy 28-75 and it was extremely sharp. Also, try all lenses at the same aperture.

I have the Tamron, the DA, and an FA 50/1.4. Between the DA and Tamron there's no contest that Tamron is way sharper when stopped down to 3.2. I haven't used the fifty enough on dslr to see how sharp it really is, but from my little library of shots from it and people's opinions here, the fifty should be at least as good as the tamron (probably better).

Check for focus inaccuracies then shoot in daylight. Although it's weird that the DA is sharper since it's a slower lens and the camera should actually have harder time focusing iwth it.

Or under "white" fluorescent. Under tungsten, K20D's AF is way off.

According the EXIF, they *are* all at the same aperture - f/4.

But I'd agree it's likely to be a focus and/or shake issue. The DA50-200 is better than a lot of people give it credit for - I found mine superior at 50mm and f/4 to the 18-55 I or II at f/5.6 as well as to the M50/2 at f/4 - but it shouldn't be beating the 50/1.7 or Tamron at f/4 so handily.

I have this lens and haven't yet used it much.
I would've wanted to see the comparison shots.
Maybe it would egg me or inspire me to use it more.

I reshot in daylight, definitely the Tamron and F1.7-50mm performed much better:

Tamron:

F1.7 50mm:

DA50-200mm:

The DA still has really good sharpness in this center crop. But I did notice that it's not as sharp in other areas away from the center. The F1.7 50mm did come out sharpest overall, to my relief that I didn't have a bad copy

My original test seems to suggest that the DA is less susceptible to bad focus under tungsten light.

Hmm, exif wasn't coming thru for me.

I like my DA L 50-200 a lot, sharpness pretty comparable to the DA L 18-55 @ 50mm.

The Tammy 28-75 f/2.8 I had focused poorly in less-than-bright light until f/4 or so - one of the reasons I sold it.

K20D consistently front focuses under tungsten light, with pretty much any lens. You have to shoot at around f/2 to notice.

I have both lenses.
Within the overlapped focal length 50-75mm, the Tamron 28-75mm is definitely sharper given the same aperture seting.
Having said that, the DA 50-200mm is really a nice lens, especially for centre sharpness.
For its light weight, compactness, budget-friendly price and very acceptable image quality, I'm pretty satisfied with the DA 50-200mm.
