Samyang 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens

Hi,

Just saw this in my random ebay search.
Samyang 8mm f/3.5 Aspherical IF MC Fish-eye for PENTAX - eBay (item 110397801088 end time Jul-02-09 07:52:25 PDT)

Anyone has any experince or knowledge of this lens? Is is a remake like the Samyang 85mm F1.4 ?

Mike

Wow, that's cool; I don't think you can "remake" an 85/1.4 into an 8/3.5 fisheye :-D

I wonder if it's AF? The only other company that makes an AF 8/3.5 right now that I'm aware of is Sigma, but this looks nothing like it. The only other 8mm I know of is the MF Peleng 8mm by Belomo in Belarus, but this looks like better build quality.

This looks like a nice cheap alternative to the Sigma, especially for people who just want to use a near circular fisheye for fun effects and don't want to spend $800 on a Sigma.

The specs mention that it is manual focus. You should be able to buy the DA 10-17 for around the same price which is auto focus and also much more versatile.

Another similarity to the Samyang 85/1.4 - the auction photos show a Nikon version, so there's no way to tell if it's KA mount.

I'd be willing to bet it is.

I wonder what else Smayang has up its sleaves...

There is a test on Optyczne.pl - testy aparatów, testy obiektywów, testy lornetek, inne testy ,aparaty cyfrowe, obiektywy, lornetki, artyku?y, nowo?ci, opinie komentarze - Optyczne.pl. It performed quite well.
I am not sure if they translated it an LensTip.com - lens review, lenses reviews, lens specification - Lenstip.com which is english version of the same site.

The rumour is that Samyang will introduce a fast 14mm by the end of the year.

I have just ordered this lens, but it will probably take about two weeks 'til I can really try it out. The reason for getting this instead of for example the DA 10-17mm is €. In Europe I can order this thing for less than half of what the zoom costs today. Easy calculation.

But what would be interesting to know is how would this thing perform on full frame? As I don't shoot film, I don't naturally have any K mount FF camera today, but perhaps some day... So, would this thing create a perfect round vigneting, does the image circle extend over the image border or would I get a funny shaped vigneting like on a DA 10-17mm?

I have the Samyang 8mm fisheye and it is one very fun lens. In Picture of the week I've posted a few decent recent pics. The lens is not AF and you will need to drop back the exposure but not by too much.
Here's a little tip for a substantially better price. Pop into the Samyang website and contact them for details of the Australian distributor. The local dealer will probably get your email forwarded on to him and email you.

OK, I found something. This website shows images where the lens hood has been "shaved" off and the lens was on a FF Canon 5D body. It seems the image circle extends beyond the border at top and bottom.

Hmmm... A quite different shape on Canon 5D here: http://www.fotokreatywni.pl/falcon/na_nieskonczonosc_5D_4800px.jpg

Perhaps that's without the hood shaved off.

6.5mm F3.5 Opteka looks just like the 8mm

They both have 10 Elements in 7 Groups, 180° diagonal FOV and 1ft close focus except one is rated 6.5mm and the other 8mm
