M42 adapter? I am wondering.

I bought what was advertised to be a genuine Pentax M42 adapter on ebay but am having problems mounting a lens (Super Takumar 200mm f4)--first time I've done this) and the adapter doesn't look like the one Hin has posted on his blog. It says "49 mm" as well as "Asahi Pentax Japan". So what is this thing if it is not an M42 adapter? And if it is an M42, what is the trick to attaching the lens?

Thanks,

Debi

Could you have bought a reverse adapter by mistake? These are used to reverse mount a lens with 49mm filter threads for macro prhotography.

Are the threads male on the other side?

I welcome you inadvertantly to the world of macro.

you have a 49mm reversing ring, to be used with a 50mm or similar lens with 49mm filter threads to do close up work

keep it and enjoy. it might even work with the takumar you wanted to mount the other way round

Here is the original

As mentioned those rev adapators can be a lot of fun for macro shooting.

But if I were you I would order an original M42 to K adaptor from PentaxUSA

Get the original!

Get a partial or full refund.. and enjoy the adapter. I personally think the extension tube path is better with takumars, especially since takumar has stop down metering switch, making it easier to use than pretty much anything else other than a costly "A" tubes or a real macro lens. focus, stop down, then click... but this applies to reversing ring as well I guess

Thanks, all. That is what it is... I already have one but it's a cheapy, so I guess I'll keep this but negotiate with the seller because I think $25 is a bit too much for a reversing ring even if it is gen-u-wine.

Get it from the Pentax website direct. It kills me, units that sell on Ebay are more expensive than from Pentax. ???.
