I just checked my 50-135.
And I noticed that yes there is something about < 1mm movement before the focus scale starting to move when you move it to the other direction.
But I don't feel it as loose though. I'm not sure what you mean with being loose.
My focus ring feels really tight.

Is that in AF quickshift or MF because my lens is like that in both. I heard from others that it should only happen in AF quickshift though. My dad insists we go to a store and then compare lenses first though. Any good camera stores around Houston that stock Pentax?

Guys, my brand new 50-135 does the same, little "dead zone" in focus ring, distance scale catches up with the ring after somewhere 0.2-0.5mm of rotation. and yes, I also can't tell it's loose. it's perfectly tighten, just this behavior.
