TOU/FIVE STAR lens -- any good?

I found this at the local camera store today:

and am curious if it's worth my time.
I'm no Google guru, but searching only seems to lead me to eBay listings and mentions of the existence of this lens, but nothing further.

Does anyone have any experience with one of these lenses, perhaps even on a DSLR??

I've got a Five Star (without the word Tou, lens cap says Toyo optics) 3.5-4.8/35-75mm in KA mount. It's a very nice lens with solid quality feel to it and it performs well also. It came in a lot with a bunch of other lenses and although I haven't really used it much I like it. It's sharp wide open with good contrast and the only thing "wrong" with it is the variable aperture through the zoom range which can cause exposure errors in AV mode.

Very inexpensive when new. Mostly metal construction. Some elements retained with snap rings instead of threaded rings. I've reconstructed two of these that were disassembled by a technician and deemed not economically repairable. I got them working again but the 4X6 prints were flarey. I'd say pass, unless dirt cheap.

Thanks for the replies!

This was one of the lenses that didn't have a price on it (of course!), but if their other lenses were any indication, I would guess they want somewhere around $20-30. I'm never in the area when they're open, so maybe that's someone else's find now.

All I know is that I see a lot of them and they never generate much interest or a decent sale price. No body wants them.

Hi! I am from Fort Worth as well!! I have one also without the TOU and I love it. It is an A lens and works very well on my DSLR's.

Any sample pictures?

sorry if this is too late a reply here ...
but i was trying to find some info regarding the TOU/FIVE STAR lens brand and my searches got me here too ...
so, let's share some info ...
_ _ _

i have a 28mm F:2.8 lens with this brand name on it, made by Toyo
bought from a seller on ebay for $32 a few years ago ....
came very clean: no dusts, no dents or leaks, almost like new ...

works quite fine and i like it ...
use it as a 42mm lens on my APS-C Pentax cameras ...
came with a Makinon lens cap that certainly does not belong to it ...
focusing ring goes below 1' / 30cm down to a setting of Macro 1:5

works in Manual, B and X modes only, on Pentax K-5, K-7 and K-x so far

see pictures please

last one was taken with the lens at its minimum focusing distance

photos of the Toyo lens taken using a Pentax DA 18~55mm AL WR lens

all pictures taken with the smallest size 2MP resolutin @ the lowest color depth of 1* in JPG format using a Pentax K-7 on a dull cloudy day (did that on purpose to see how the lens can perform under lowest quality image settings - date: Tue 6 Jun 17 time: near sunset)

some further exposure and contrast manipulation was made after viewing the photos on a laptop screen, which looked rather too dark ... (they looked quite ok on the camera's LCD monitor though ...)

exposure settings stated on photos themselves ...
(correction: last image, close up of the cactus, should read F:2.8 instead of F:3.5m, sorry!)

A friend of mine just picked up the Five Star 35-75 model. I'll let you know how it performs after burning a roll with it.
