I agree. Harmonica2's other shot is also excellent.

There's some very interesting info regarding this lens on Boj's site:

FA 85/2.8 Soft

Main points of interest is lack of "A" setting and stop-down operation between f2.8-4.5 for the FA version.

I hadn't realized this lens was considered "rare" - I've come across a few during my used lens shopping trips.

There's an F version on eBay now for $385 in case somebody's interested (not mine!). About $100 lower than any other price I've seen. Not sure what the difference is with the FA version, but I remember there being something different about the aperture control.

Conkin filters are close???

Not to take anything away from this lens at all, but many years ago I shot local news video .... and we often "classed" up our talking head portrait shots with Conkin diffusion filters. We could soften up wrinkles and give it a similar dreamy look as you see in these wonderful samples posted here. And since the filter transmitted nearly all the available light, there was no penalty in lens speed.

These "soft" Pentax lenses are wonderful, but if you can get nearly the same in-camera effect with a 30 dollar filter, it might be worth a look.

Maybe someone on this thread has the filter I'm talking about and will give it a spin...

I too think that using a filter should yield a similar effect.

While I see the allure of the "soft focus" to some extent, I don't like that nothing is in real focus.

Rather than "Soft Focus" I'd much prefer "Smooth Transition Focus". The Minolta/Sony 135 STF is a dream, AFAIC. Look at some of the sample images. Simply awesome.
