Interesting that you should make the comment about white balance. I have noticed that some (not all) of my M42 glass tends to "fool" the automatic white balance on my K10D towards the cooler end of things in certain lighting conditions. This is particularly true with my Russian Helios 44M and Jupiter-9 lenses. I don't know if it is related to coatings or glass formulation, but the affect is definitely there.
As you mention, equalizing the WB in PP corrects the issue. Alternatively, calibrating the WB before exposure with a white card is also an option.
