DA 16-45 vs DA 17-70

I currently have the DA 16-45mm and have been very happy with the lens. However, I would be interested in having a little more reach. I have been considering the DA 17-70mm as a replacement for the DA 16-45. Has anyone tried both lens? And how do they compare?

Well at bhphotovideo.com there are 8 reviews and they are all good.

I've ordered the DA17-70 and when I get it I'll provide some feedback.

Keep in mind the 16-45mm starts at 24mm (35mm equivalent) which is uncommon for most suppliers in APSC format and also quite a big plus point if you like landscape shooting.

A lso know that at PentaxUserUK that reviews are very postive.

If you still wanna know, I've done testing both. 16-45 is real wide, even 45mm seems wider than 17-70's 45mm to me. And sharper than 17-70, open wide in 16-24mm is sharpest, you have to close down at narrower end to get close sharpness at 16mm.

17-70 is not that sharp but sufficient for everyday using, no need to say 17-70mm gives you the comfort and opportunity of wider choices of angles, you can even shoot portraits with it, when you have to.

You can jump into streets and nature with 17-70mm, but not with 16-45mm, you have to back-up 16-45mm with another narrower angle lens.

I am a sharpness freak, so even 17-70's macro ratio is better than 16-45mm (and one blade more, 7 blades) , in sharpnes 16-45mm is unbeatable in macro too. For instance in my macro gallery mosquito on a daisy taken with 16-45mm. I've taken some natural amber shots with 16-45mm, brrr, results are stunning.

Thats all I can say now.

Best wishes.
Can.

I prefer the extra wide 1mm and extra sharpness of the DA16-45, not to mention its lower price. Reach to 70mm is not as handy as it might look, at least not for me, since in that focal range I want a much faster lens.

I actually bought the DA16-45 and FA43 at the same time. Might look redundant from a strictly focal length perspective, but they serve different purposes.

I use the DA17-70 quite frequently at 70mm. I'm a huge fan of the DA 77ltd, and I've gotten accustomed to that FL. I also find the DA 17-70 plenty sharp (tests are not too much different from the 16-45), but then to me, sharpness differences between two zooms with MTF values reaching over 2000 are overrated, especially for an "all round" kind of lens which tends tobe hand-held.

Thanks for all the comments. I was thinking of replacing my DA 16-45 and Tamron 28-75mm with a DA 17-70mm. After reading the comments, I will keep the 2 lenses. It would be nice to have a single lens to cover that range, but from the above comments, I do not want to give up the sharpness I get from the 2 lens combination.

Yeah, you're right about that. For me I already had the DA16-45, so it was a matter of trying to find a compelling reason to upgrade.

I was in the position just like you, say 3 months ago, also photozone.de results encouraged me to get 17-70mm along with 16-45. Even Angry Wife syndrome couldn't stop me. Now there I am.

Comparisons used to be between the Sigma 17-70 & the Pentax 16-45 and I don't think anything was ever conclusive...I've owned the Sigma for a good while and have been very pleased with it - certainly produces very sharp images - but have just also bought a used Pentax 17-70, the main reason being I'm a big fan of the Pentax colour/contrast.

Over the next few days I intend evaluating the two 17-70s & whilst I'm sure that both stand up well against the 16-45 I think if I already owned the 16-45 the Pentax 17-70 would have to have something significant IQ wise over the 16-45, which from what I've read it probably doesn't

I have the DA 16-45mm. If only the price are the same, I'd get the DA17-70mm.
I'd rather have the 16-45mm and get another lens from the remaining cash..

That's what I did!

16-45mm + 70mm!

After getting used to the IQ of the 70mm, I doubt if I can give up that two lens combo for a single 17-70mm.

Just wondered what 70mm is that with high IQ for just 110 $. I might get one. Would you send me pic samples of the 70mm please (or pic links).

Thanks in advance.

I have a feeling he kicked a bit more in than the difference between those two lenses.
For really critical work at around 70mm, I do reach for my FA 77 ltd, but that is not a $110 lens, and it isn't necessary very often.

Wonderful lens - if you can find it

Ever try the 28-70 F/4 to fill in that gap above the 16-45? It's a nice match up on a K20D or (on the way) K-7 (I hope).
