Your Advice Pl-Opportunity to buy a Sigma 28-300mm DL lens

Hi!
Does anyone know if this lens is a good one? I have the opportunity to buy it for C$150 incl shipping.

I already have a SMC F 70-210 but thought this will give me more coverage on either sides. Pl advise and if you have any photos, lets look at them.

Thanks

Tasha

My list of lenses are
SMC A 50mm 1.4
SMC F 50mm 1.7
SMC F 35-105mm
SMC F 70-210
Kimunor 500mm (yet to arrive, dont know its quality)
Auto Rikenon 28mm
Auto Rikenon 135mm
Sears Auto 135mm f2.8

Sigma 28-300

The lens is well built and has a heavy feel to it. Maybe it is just my lens, but I like my zoom to be smooth and this lens does tend to be tad stiff when zooming in or out. Thats a great price for it new.

There have been several incarnations of the Sigma 28-300. My personal favorite is Sigmas original release of this lens. It is heavier than the latest offerings, but it features a much larger front lens element (72mm) that seems to gather more light, especially at the long end, than the current models from Tamron and Sigma.
My 28-300 is on my camera almost constantly.

Put me in Coach!

I use the Tamron 28 - 300 lens with the 72mm filter ring on my Pentax ist DS. I took this photo last weekend at a High School Baseball game with this lens.

iso 800, f7.1, 1/400, zoomed to approx. 135mm for this shot.

Thanks for the input on Sigma 28-300mm IF DL

Thank you all for the responses. Was wondering if I should go for it inspite of having the SMC F 70-210mm. Does anyone have both to offer a suggestion?

Thanks

Tasha

I don't own the lens but I will share with you what I think (FWIW):

- If you want something longer than 200 and is on a budget, I will have a look at Sigma/Tamron 70-300 as both lenses get good reviews on this forum. If you are not on a budget, then have a look at Sigma 100-300/4 and Sigma 135-400/4.5-5.6

- If you want to cover the range between wideange to 70mm, then have a look at Sigma 17-70, Tamron 28-75/2.8 and Pentax DA 18-55.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you probably will get better IQ with F70-210 than with the 28-300 zoom. And 28mm on digital isn't really that wide anyway, so if I was to look for a superzoom lens, I would probably get either Sigma 18-200 or 18-125.

hope that helps.

Well, there's a Pentax 14mm prime, but I have the 10-17 "fisheye" which I love and a new 12-24 "rectangular" which, though I have only been able to take a few pot shots with so far, most owners recommend.

And lets not forget the Zenitar 16. Cheap, built like a tank, surprisingly good optics. Fully manual.

I got mine yesterday and I love this lens. May not be an option if you want AF though.

Buy it, if you dont like it sell it. Sounds like it may be a good travel lens at the least.
