Is it too close? 40mm vs 50mm

So I've had a lot of helpful reviews. My question now is I have the 50mm 1.4. Is the 40mm going to give much more of a wider view? Is it worth having both or just picking one?

Anyone have both the 31mm 1.8 and 40mm 2.8? Any major quality difference there? Thanks!

It's not much wider, especially in APS-C digital. On film I'd say it's quite a considerable difference. I find 40mm (on film) just a tiny bit nicer to use than 50mm, the perspective is more interesting, but of course this is all personal...

31mm is almost a perfect normal, one and a half stop faster, better bokeh, and the limited pixie dust. DA 40 is the usual digital pop.

I don't think 40 will give too much of a difference. Go with a 28-31mm lens, that's a very useable difference.

It's enough wider that I can use it as a basic walkaround outdoors or indoors, which was always awkward with my 50. So I rarely use the 50 any more. But 40 is not so much wider that I don't also use my 28 a lot.

I'd go for the da 35 macro over the 40, unless you can afford the 31ltd.

I have all 31ltd, 40ltd and 50/1.7.
It all depends how you want to use the lens/es. 31 & 50 are great couple but 40 is more versatile as single lens. Now kill me or what but I almost like the rendering of 40 more (I mean the colours). 31 is a great lens though. With stunning contrast and sharpness.
So to sum it up. If you are looking for complement to your 50 go for 31 or one of the 35s. If you are looking for general use lens for 1 lens/camera setup you won't be dissapointed with 40.
Which ever you'll decide to go for, they are great great lenses.
Good luck choosing.
