It isn't a fix but I still think Pentax could offer this as an option in firmware as a bandaid. At least people with dead lenses could use AF if they wanted to.

Good luck with your other system.
What will happen though when that one also fails on you?
The same thing we do every night pinky... try to take over the world, Oh sorry... Send it back again for replace/repair. I have had a full replacement lens and the rest they have striped out the guts and fixed, depending on time frame I have had to pay $0-$300 for repairs

Not that HSM (Sigma), SDM (Pentax), USM (Canon), SWM (Nikon) all don't have issues, but to me, it seems like there is disproportionate number of SDM failures compared to the others, especially for the DA* 16-50 and DA*50-135 lenses (from my own anecdotal evidence gathered though reading on the net and real life experiences).
I think you should add the DA 17-70 to that list. Mine is finished and just waited for courier to bring it back. Warranty is over so $220.00 is gone.

That's a statistic we'll never be able to substantiate, and I'm not sure USM lenses are any less proportionally prone to failure. It would be very nice to know those stats, but then what to do about it? Only Pentax can rectify their SDM technology...
That is because the people with the data aren't about to fess it up. There are plenty of anecdotal data to put the DA* 16-50mm on the suspect list, especially at $899 to $999 street price here in the U.S.A.
