Vivitar Series 1 105mm f/2.5 Macro

Anyone have one od these, are they as good as they claim to be considering they are a Series 1 lens? Someone has a few available on eBay for $250 and I desperately want a macro lens for this time of year. Are there different releases of this lens with varying optical quality like the 70-210's have? Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

I have one of those. They are made by Kino Precision/Kiron and are optically identical to the Lester A. Dine Dental 105mm Macro and the the Kiron 105mm Macro. The only complaint you'll ever hear about this lens is it's weight. It is built like a battle tank. I personally like it that way.
It is the one on the left....

I have the Kiron version of this lens. Optically, it is excellent, but like hog rider said, it is a heavy lens. $250 seems kind of high, the kiron has been going for around $150 on ebay lately, but maybe the Vivitar version sells for more than the Kiron/Lester A Dine versons.

Check out the Tamron 90mm 2.5 & 2.8 lenses.

I have a Tamron adaptall 90/2.5 (55mm) for macro .. It is a fun to use lens & very, very sharp.. It is 1:2 with out extension tubes, 1:1 with. The 2.8 models are dedicated mounts & 1:1.. There are 2 versions of the 2.5, The early ones are all metal with a 49mm filter size & the later ones have more plastic & are 55mm . The 55 is still very well built .. wildherre

I've just had one of them.
For the price, you should note that it is really "brand new" in its original packaging including all the accesories the bag, the user manual etc.
(I assume we're talking about the same seller).
It is heavy and it looks beautiful.
I will send pictures as soon as I shot one!

I recently bought the lens you are asking about. It is NOS, new old stock. I am real happy with it. Bought on the reccomendation of Hog Rider. If it is the same vendor on ebay, the BIN was $250 or best offer. I made an offer of $200 and bought it for that price.
Good luck
Mike

It's really quite a nice lens.... I believe I got mine from the same ebayer and it was brand spankin' new, which I wasn't quite expecting! It's a heavy one.. built like a brick! And, very sharp!

I will enjoy the heck outta this lens! But, I gotta tell you... manual focusing at 1:1 macro takes some patience (and often a tripod!). Depth of field is paper thin! It's about the most challenging element of photography I've run into!

It also makes for a nice general purpose short telephoto lens too.

Looking forward to your shots!

Here's a crop of that water drop...
