Calling Tamron 10-24mm owners

I am going to buy either the Sigma or Tamron ultra wide lens. I am not considering the Pentax as I simply cannot afford it.

There is a lot written about the Sigma and it seems to have its own fan club. There is much less about the Tamron and I have heard some very positive things (such as the dpreview) and also some very negative.

Are there any Pentax users out there that have or have used this lens and what are your opinions of it. Comparisons with the Sigma are also welcome.

I want a super-wide but don’t want to break the bank or buy a lemon!

Cheers MZ

I don't think this lens is available in Pentax mount.

I may be wrong here, but if I were you I'd definitely take a look at the links below:

Thanks, Richard. Good to know the lens exists--but haven't seen it at any US store.

In New York, USA try either Adorama or B&H Photovideo:

Supposedly out, but I haven't seen any reviews by Pentax users. Ditto the 24-70HSM...no reviews by Pentax users but it's available...

despite a lot of interest before its introduction, i think early reviews seemed to be fairly negative which is why not many people have this lens.

dpreview did do a review of the lens

@Kenyee - I tried the 24-70 HSM on my K10d at a camera show a month or so ago; I was actually surprised that Sigma had that and the 30mm f/1.4 at their booth in Pentax mount but not many of their cheaper models. The lens seemed nice enough in the few minutes I spent playing with it, but well out of my price range at the moment.

I was consdering buying this lens for my vacation a few weeks ago. I called Tamron, but they could not promise a certain release date. So I bought the Sigma--very happy with it, BTW.

However, the Tamron rep told me they hoped to have it out by Mid June 2009. My guess is the lens just came out in Pentax mount--that is why info is scarce on it. There are plenty of samples out there for C & N mount though.

The lens is reported to have awesome flare resistance. I suspect we will soon see samples.

Did you try any /2.8 shots with it? Wondering how well it focused (Sigma has a tendency to FF and have decentering issues)...

I did shoot at f/2.8 but the focus was all me. I don't own any HSM lenses so I've never bothered upgrading the firmware on my K10d and it will only auto focus with screw drive lenses. As a new lens design the 24-70 is HSM only (the manual focus feel was decent though...).

I'll dig up my sample shots again and see if any are worth posting - they're all of signs and sales reps.
