Telephoto Lens recommendations!

It's tax return time here downunder which means I get some moolah to fund my LBA! My telephoto needs are currently satisfied by my trusty DA18-250mm... however I've decided that it's time for an upgrade so what do you guys think I should replace it with? At the moment I've only really got 3 lens on my radar, being the Sigma 70-200 2.8, Tamron 70-200 2.8, or the Pentax DA* 200mm.

I was originally set on the Sigma but I've had a quick look through my photos and I've realised that the times when I do shoot telephoto, 90% of the time I'm shooting at 250mm. Given this, the Pentax prime came into the equation, and now I'm stuck with a difficult choice!

Any of you guys have a similar situation to me, and what choice did you end up making? I'm still leaning towards the Sigma just for the safety of the zoom and the option of a teleconverter, but I don't know... what do you guys think?

Hi hsu1 from fellow melbournian........I am expcting my new Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 di macro in about 10 hours time ...and can't wait!!!
I researched for hours online and in the end i went for the tammy. The sigma simply doesnt have the image quality that the tamron does.
The sigma has HSM but i dont care too much about that....I want IQ and the tamron has it in spades.
So i suggest you get the tamron 70-200mm 2.8....good luck with your decision.

Ps. I also got a new sigma 1.4 teleconverter....mmmmmm might have a sicky tomorrow.

I will keep you posted hsu1

When you say you shoot at 250mm 90% of the time, is 250 sufficient, or would you really like to go even longer? Could you get closer so that 200 would work?

What kind of images are you taking? From what I've seen around here, the Sigma focuses a bit faster than the Tamron, but the Tamron is a hair sharper at 200mm.

I hope you didn't get the 1.4x Sigma teleconverter for your new Tamron.
If you did and its the EX version then it won't fit as the front element protrudes slightly.

Just ordered a Bigma from CR Kennedy under there price match scheme with my tax return. I'd suggest looking at the DA55-300mm lens if the tax return will let you, best price in town for them is at Digital Camera Warehouse.

How much and from where did you get it? After browsing a few threads here I'm even more confused than ever! The sample pics from the Tamron look excellent, but the Sigma has that HSM factor . . . However I'm a little concerned about the reliability of the HSM motor . . . sounds like I'm going backwards and forwards here!

Primarily when I'm shooting at the longer end of my lens it's for close up portrature at various events & festivals. I've never felt as if 250mm was too short for my needs, but then again I've never actually tried anything longer than 250mm. Very rarely do I find myself in places where I can't just move closer to the subject so I don't think that it will be too much of an issue. If worse comes to worse a teleconvertor will temporarily solve my problems, won't they?

Why not consider the DA* 50-135mm? The 70-200mm lenses you mentioned are about 3-4 times heavier than the 18-250mm.
