DA* 16-50, M 20, 12-24, 10-20 at 20mm?

so which among these 4 lenses is considered the top lens at 20mm? you may also include the Sigma 20 1.8 if anyone has it.

without stopping down, i think all of those pentax lenses would easily be better than the sigma. the prime, being a prime, would probably come close to the top, running against the 16-50 followed closely by the 12-24. but, who on earth would actually be able to give a concrete answer to this question, and why???!!!

Top lens as a complete IQ package?
Who's to say? but I realise the 12-24 has its strength at the wider end, the 16-50 and 10-20 in the middle, and primes are, well, primes....

There are probably a couple of people who could give a definitive answer, but as long we we're playing guessing games here, I'll guess that they'd all be pretty similar, which is to say, a little worse than the DA21...

my personal tests rank the Sigma 10-20 best @ 20 compared to the DA21 and the 16-50, not counting speed, obviously

the 10-20 exhibits the least barrel distortion, with the 16-50 exhibiting the most

and as far as sharpness goes, they are the same.

keep in mind however all 3 lenses serve different a different purpose,

the 10-20 is for super wide angle work,
the DA21 is for "is that a lens in your pocket" comic relief
and the 16-50 is for weathersealed utilitarianism

The ultra wides will ikely do a better job (including the 21mm) because they will show almost no distortion or pin cushioning, particularly the 12-24 as you are close to the middle of the range.

M 20 f/4

My M 20 f/4 is the best performer (sharpest, best corners on DX, probably most contrasty) at that FL that I've personally used:

DA 12-24 f/4
DA* 16-50 f/4
DA (I, II) 18-55 kit
Tak 20 4.5

Shots from the M 20 f/4:

I think the M 20 f/4's blah reviews from the film days are not applicable to DX - it's a brilliant lens, IMO.
