Sigma 55-200 f4-5.6 DC for K7

I don't usually shoot tight shots, (or write "reviews") but a few days ago I thought I'd go out and grab a cheap 55mm+ lens for my K7 just in case I should ever need one.

I stumbled across the Sigma 55-200mm f4-5.6 DC (usually handed out as part of a duel lens package for the K7 at a local camera store). For AUD $200 I'm impressed. Like I said earlier, I don't usually shoot tight, so why spend any more on a lens I'll hardly use?

For the price the optical quality is quite impressive. The build on the other hand is maybe not so nice, bearing a light, plastic casing. The autofocus isn't brilliant, and isn't incredibly fast, but at least the focus/zoom rings are big, chunky, and nice in the hand. A great addition for all you manual focusers.

The stock lens hood is a bit nasty to attach/detach without forcing the focus component to twist and shift. If you've set your camera to automatic focus you'll also hear the motor resisting. Not a great sound.

The lens doesn't weigh much (little over 0.3kg), which can make the lens feel cheap and breakable, but pays off when you're thinking about carrying it around all day. Because of it's weight it also seems to sit well with the strap around one's neck.

Good: Price
Optical Quality
Large Zoom/Focus Rings
Metal Mount
Weight

Not so Good: Autofocus Speed
Overall Build Quality
Lens Hood

Overall: If you want a cheap, medium telephoto lens, this Sigma is the way to go. Great for someone, like myself, who wants the option of going in for the zoom, but doesn't desire taking out a bank loan. Although this lens won't deliver super-professional results, it will certainly satisfy the needs of many hobbyists/enthusiasts looking to extend their zoom range.

- Example shots to be taken tomorrow and posted here soon

I concur. I had this when I bought my istDs, it was the ONLY lens that went up to 200 at the time I recall. IQ was n't bad at all, zoom ring was bit stiff to turn. I've sold it now but don't really have anything too bad to say about it.
