Auto Takumar on K20d

I'm curious about a comparison between the auto-takumars with later Takumars. Are there any situations where a more advanced coating like an SMC would be a disadvantage? Does anyone own both an auto-takumar and an updated takumar that they have done comparisons with in a variety of situations? I guess I'm ultimately wondering if there would be a point in having lets say a 55mm 1.8 auto takumar as well as a 55mm 1.8 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar.

I have just that combo, though no K20D

I think there's a point to it - the Auto with the simpler coating does bloom more easily, but so do Leica and Nikon lenses, so you get that kind of look. It is 'clearer' as well, i.e. the colors are rendered differently. Technically the SMC is better not just due to veiling flare but light transmission.

I own a couple of Autos, as well as regular Taks. I love the way all my Pentax lenses perform. The Auto 85 f 1.8 is a gem and my little 55 1.8 is nice too--there just isn't enough time to shoot with all these lenses though.

Do you want a couple of shots posted?

I have some of both and I agree with Nester, the Auto are alot clearer. I prefer the colors from the SMC's, but I guess there is a time and a place for each lens.

sure some shots for comparison would be great, I'd love to see the difference (however subtle) you guys are talking about.

Also, Jewelltrail, you have my sympathy for the Big Papi thing. If it ever came out that Chipper Jones had tested positive for anything, I'd be devistated.

Thanks Scott. Such is the way of professional sports and capitalism, eh? We still have to wait for the next 100 names to be released too.

Scott, I will put some shots together for you to view. I have to prepare for a vacation which starts this weekend. All I have on the thumb drive right now are these two: first one wide open in very low light (85mm Auto @ f 1.8); second one with the same lens at f8, I think.

Here are 2: first one around f8-f11 & 2nd one around f2--have to guess with shutter speed clues--older shots and no exif on these old lenses.

Okay, here are 3 shots. The first one is from a 2008 produced lens. The second one is the Auto Tak 55mm f 1.8 (not sure of date--in 60s some time) and the 3rd one is the Auto Tak 85mm f 1.8 (produced 1961). They were all taken back to back in time and shoot nearly the same scene, with allowance for focal length differences, of course. Similar apertures too.
