Kit lens soft at one side!

Just noticed a few shots taken with my DAII kit lens were soft at one side (the grip side). It first struck me on this shot (at the top) - the problem was worsened with perspective correction in PSE:

A test I did tonight confirms that the grip side of the lens is softer. Taken at f5.6 with the camera held vertically, with the grip held below (left) and from above (right). Crops from top of image:

Is this sort of issue significant enough to warrant sending the lens back under warranty, or am I asking too much of the kit lens in terms of quality? I can't recall my previous DAI kit lens having this problem.

Thanks

Will

At first I thought of the old joke about tyres only being flat on the bottom.

You might want to try some more testing in good conditions to eliminate user error.
Tripod or stable surface and then shoot a brick wall or something that is flat. Make sure you are straight on.
If further tests confirm the issue, yes, it definitely needs a warranty return. Just be absolutely sure first because these repair centres just love turning round and saying "we can find nothing wrong".

Just don't photograph anything of value on the soft side.

As we age, our powers of recollection fade. There is an excellent article on the matter somewhere on the web, but I can't seem to recall where.

Thanks Gary, I'll try that. Luckily I bought it from SRS, a dealer with a very good customer service reputation... and have primes which cover the kit lens's focal length
