77mm ltd or Tak 85mm f1.9??

So guys i need a little help...

I have been wanting a really nice portrait lens for some time now and recently I found a really nice 85mm 1.9 Tak at a second hand store in Victoria for about Au$400 or approx US$330. The problem is I think that is probably a little expensive since it is of course m42 mount and manual. So what should i do save a bit more and go for the 77mm ltd? or would that Tak be good enough for an enthusiast like me???

That's a bit much for the tak 1.9... unless it's in excellent condition (no brassing / scrach etc), is the SMC version, and comes with hood + case.

I'd say get a cheaper one from a good seller in ebay where the glass is still pristine. If you don't like the FOV you can always sell it back at almost no loss

Any chance you can leave something with the owner of the store so you can take it out for an hour to see how you like it? I'm not sure what the going rate is for a 1.9, but I think that sounds fare. I have the S-M-C Tak 85/1.8 and the Tak 83/1.9 and love them....

Check out Mike Cash's pics in the "Takumar Club" thread....he's been using a 85/1.9 fairly recently....

The price might be a little high, but maybe not for your local market. The newer f1.8 versions are generally more desireable and might go for that price - they have 6 elements instead of 5. I believe there are Super-Takumar and Super-Multi-Coated Takumar versions of the 85/1.9, and the f1.8 version is only found as a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar.

When I use this lens for portraits, I don't need the extra features of a modern lens. It's certainly good enough for me. I find current prices to be too high, though. At that price you can consider the Vivitar/Bower/Opteka/Rokinon/Samyang 85mm f1.4, which is still manual focus but comes in a KA mount so it works great on the camera. The DA70/2.4 might be another option; I'm not sure of current pricing.

I have had all three versions, Super 85 1.9, SMC 85 1.8 and now the 77 Limited. But I got the 77 limited only because I wanted AF because I am lazy.
Keep shopping around for a better price on the 85 1.9 because they come up quite often. The 1.8s are a bit scarcer and go for a bit more. You should be able to find a 85 1.9 for around $200 US.

Anyway, both the 1.9 and 1.8 are wonderful lenses. The quality is great and the Taks are a pleasure to use.

at the risk of being labelled a heretic for going outside pentax, have you considered the samyang/bower/vivitar/rokinon et.al. lens.

it is the same price as the Tak yoou are looking at, and comes with a KA mount, so it is fully compatible with the metering o the DSLRs as well as P-TTL flash.
