M- 200mm F/4

M-200mm F/4 in great shape. Can't decide if I want to sell or maybe trade for something else. problem is not sure what I want or what anyone would be willing to trade for it. I figure M-200 are selling on the bay around $75-$100USD ish. My one issue is I am lazy and have not taken the time to really use a M lens on my DS or soon K10. So anyone have any thoughts good bad ugly.

1.Should I sell
2.Trade
3.Get off my but and learn to use it.

Hi Pat B

Depends if you shoot at 200mm at all or not. I believe currently M200/4 (and A200/4) are the only affordable primes at 200mm. Others (A*, FA*, etc) will cost you an arm and a leg! So if you do shoot at that focal length, I would say keep it and learn to use it.

If yo don't shoot at 200mm much and reckon a zoom will give you enough quality, then trade it for something that you need. Since you haven't listed your current lens setup and subjects that you usually shoot, we can't recommend anything.

cheers
Kenny

Here is my suggestion:
Keep it and enjoy its nice build quality!
Then define this coming Saturday as a 200mm day, use only that lens and task yourself with bringing home at least one keeper, which you post here!

I have the 200mm as well; so far I have used it only on a film body. Perhaps I should follow my own suggestion?

Hey, I'll challenge you: By this coming Sunday I will post one photo taken with the M 200/4.0 the preceeding Saturday! Or I owe you lunch! And vice versa!

I should update what I have for lens. I can say I do have a couple in the 200m range. I have a Sigma 70-200 2.8, and a Pentax SMCFA 80-200 F/4.7. So it is not a matter of if I have something in that range, I have more then enough. I have only used the lens a few times and do like what it puts out. What do I shoot..... hmmmm , everything. You know I never really have had one particular style. I am open to many things.

OLE- you are on . I will give it a try this weekend. We have a few things going on but the weather looks okay. You confused me a little; I need to post something before this Sunday the 11/12/06? Or next Saturday.

The thing that always gets me what to shoot in, Program mode will not work, But M AV and TV can be accomplished and I have to look but I can get the DS to set the exposure with the IE button. UGHH I am really not this clueless just never use it but know I can look around to find out the particular.

Either way I am still on the fence. I really want a fast 50mm. I have a A 1.7 but keep thinking about upgrading to the FA 1.4.... hmmmm And maybe a sale of the 200 will help getting that. hmmmm

Post no later that on Sunday 11/12/06!

The FA 50/1.4 is a nice lens and according to a catalog from B&H, which I just received, there is currently a $50 mail-in rebate from Pentax on this lens.

Challenge Photo

smc Pentax-M 200mm 1/500 f/8 ISO 200, *ist D

I took a few shots with this lens today. 200mm is somewhat long for a walk around lens - I got to zoom quite some with the feet! Many of my shots turned out unsharp - I'm looking forward to getting shake reduction!

Having to press the green button to set exposure isn't a big deal; I found getting focus spot on more challenging with this lens.

The lens does a good job, and its color rendition is pleasing. Regarding sharpness I'm not convinced that it is a big step ahead of my F 70-210 zoom, which I would normally use to cover the 200mm range.

Here are some from me.

Well Ole I went crazy today with the M200. Here is a link to my page with all but two shots taken today with the 200.

Pentax M200 F/4 day

Here are a couple of favorites.

Check out the link like I said above. I took a ton. A couple of notes the plane is an 80% crop. It flew over while outside shoting. Same with the water tower shot orginal #8 with #9 90% crop.

Wow, nice shots in your gallery, and above! If you ebay the lens you have some great shots to point to in your listing!

With those great results, I don't think you should sell it. And in that case, should I move this thread to the lens forum instead?

I don't mind moving it to the lens forum. Thanks for checking out the shots. It was fun to use and I was all around with different f stops and shutter speeds. For the most part stuck to ISO200. I did do some PP almost all the shots. I used Silky pics3.0 and then PSPX for sharpening and a little leveles here and there. I agree with Ole on the SR would be nice with this lens. Jury still out but I am leaning toward selling......

Thanks for posting these images. The 200mm f4 is the next lens I am considering picking up from KEH and these examples are very useful in making a more informed choice.
