Question : Takumar 300mm F/4

Anyone know what the current market value is for such a lens? I have a chance to pick one up from a local Camera store, but I don't know what a fair price is?

The lens look to be in fantastic condition with case.

Any help here? Thank you.

I had one for a short time - here's the sale thread from the marketplace which has a bunch of info. From this old archived site, it appears that there were four different 300mm f/4 Takumars, and without seeing the one you're looking at, I can't guess which model it is.

The one I sold was in fantastic condition as well, and I sold it for $155 + shipping.

As far as f4, there were 4. There was a Takumar that had 3 elements in 3 groups. A takumar that had 4 elements in 4 groups. Then there was the Super Takumar that had 5 elements in 5 groups and the S-M-C Tak that also had 5 elements in 5 groups.

The 4 element version was only made in 1966 while the 3 element versions was made from 1958 until 1965. The Super was made from 1969-72 and the s-m-c from 1972 to 76. Minimum aperture on the 2 early versions was 32 and 22 on the later. The real trick will be to spot the 4 element version.

Edit: Here is the information at the AOHC site.

I was the buyer on that 300mm Tak listed in the Marketplace (see earlier post) and I must say that my purchase price of 155 + ship was great value, in my opinion. Very nice images with wonderful color rendition.... but it isn't a fast lens to focus and shoot with, very very long throw on the focus ring.... so don't plan to bird with it.

But if you have a museum grade example with similar quality case, you're pulling upwards of 190-210 for it is my guess conservatively.

Best with it.
