Okay, I know I am still obsessing over that one lens that is going to work wonders for me.

I am all over the place. So which one is faster and sharper in your opinion? The 24mm 1.8 or the 24-70 mm 2.8
I am not so sure that I would use all the range in the 24-70 so I wonder if I am better off with the 24mm 1.8. Plus I hear the bokeh on the 24 1.8 is fantastic (which is a plus for me) and it has the macro on it which I would also like.
Anyway, any of you using this sigma 24 mm 1.8?

Well, a 1.8 is faster than a 2.8. As a rule, a prime lens will be sharper than a zoom.... not too familiar with those particular models, though.

The Sigma 24/1.8 will be my next prime lens, if I stick with Pentax.

24/1.8, 35/2.8, 50/1.4, 70/2.4 would make for a nice prime kit for weddings. Although I'd probably look to replce the 70 with the 77.

Thanks guys! I have read in older threads that the Sigma 28/1.8 is pretty good too. But I am still leaning more towards the 24/1.8.

The usual photographic definition of "fast" for a lens leaves no room for opinion: speed is defined by maximum aperture period. And f/1.8 beats f/2.8. I suspect you might have something in mind in, like how quickly the camera can focus the lens? That may depend somewhat on the camera, but in general, all else equal, a larger lens will focus more slowly than a smaller one, and a photographically "slower" lens will focus less quickly than a photographically "faster" one. Both of which suggest the 24/1.8 would win by a pretty substantial margin. But you never know until you actually test it.

I have a Sigma 24mm f1.8 gathering dust in the cupboard.
I was looking over some old shots recently and I must admit its a hard lens to beat for image quality. Flare is its biggest downfall along with its size/weight.
But, learn how to handle the flare and you wont dis-appointed with the image quality, I'm not at home right now so cant post any shots....but can do in about 4 hours from now.

Yes flare might indeed be a problem as I don't do handle those very well. But if you could post some pictures that would be great. Thanks!

At the right computer now.
These are all with Sigma EX DG 24mm f1.8.

Exif should be intact, but just in case not.

f1.7 (they call it 1.8 but it actualy is 1.7..??? ...yeah, got me beat to), so this first shot should be its worst performance.

ANd yep! I see what you mean about the flare!! But after seeing the picture you posted right before that one, how can you resist?!
How do you correct this flare problem then?

Flare is the sun hitting the front element of the lens, as this particular lens is 77mm diameter...there is a lot of glass to hit!!

How to beat it? Always use the sun hood supplied, even hold a hat over it....anything to stop the sun shining directly onto that front glass.

The flare shot is really just a rubbish shot, most things are done wrong in that shot, whereas moving a bit and thinking about the shot gets you the result you liked in the other lake scene.

Filters may be of some use....but I am not a big fan of them.

Anyway, hope that helps you a bit.

I agree that the second last shot is very nice. You should realize however, that most lens could have taken that shot. The 'niceness' of the shot in this case in my opinion is more down to the photographer, than the lens.

I have to admit that I really like the 24-70. As a zoom it is fantastic. Usable wide open, although I tend to shoot at about F5.6 for maximum sharpness. F4.0 is where I really start to see the sharpness kick in. The close focusing abilities are very useful. I have used some excellent zooms, and this is right there with them.

I do have to agree with that, I have taken some very decent landscape shots with my 18-55. I really would like to see how it performs with people, portraits as well... Mallee do you have any of those by any chance?

I was just told by another sigma 24 mm 1.8 that it is back focuses all the time, so they only use that one for ring shots!!!

So they recommended an inexpensive prime lens like an 85 1.8!! But that is not exactly inexpensive when you are using Pentax unless you go for the Rokinon or Vivitar!
