Damn Brit's Nokton 58mm 1.4

Gary was kind enough to loan me his Voigtlander 58mm at the SF meet-up the other day... well I loaned him my DA 40 so it was a swap of sorts...

Anyway I just played with it to see how it does... First off what a beautiful design. The feel of the Focus is as good as I have felt. And it definately has a 'look'. Kind of reminds me of the 77ltd in how it renders.

These are just a few test shots but I like it fine. Like the 77 it does have a bit of ca/pf wide open in contrasty situations... but stopped down a tad and it pretty much goes away.
But wide open the DOF seems even smaller than my 1.4 lenses, almost looks more like some of the 1.2's... Grain of salt as I do not own any 1.2's

Beautifully soft at 1.4

This lens stopped down is razor sharp...

And a series I like to call Macrops - Crop to macro

Original

Crop

100% crop

Glad you're enjoying it Gus, I knew it would be in good hands. Gotta watch those saturated reds though.

Wow, those are some seriously outer worldly shots (especially #3)!

Nice work, no doubt.

Of course you know what MY question is going to be...

How does the Nokton compare to your other 58mm lens? You know, the funny M42 from that former communist country...

Steve

(For those outside the know...Gus is a big fan of the Russian Helios 44M 58/2.)

(Been thinking that the Nokton may be my next major lens purchase...)

at those distances the DOF difference between a f/1.4 and f/1.2 lens is trivial, though you will notice the difference in the size and weight of the lens. in your images one of the differences I see between the nokton and the FA77 is the Coma, the FA77 isn't as susceptible to it.

glad you're having fun with the nokton.

Beautiful images Gus!

Once you try one you'll be hooked!

Voigtlanders are special in this day and age of plastic lenses.

If you purchased it from Stephen Gandy (Cameraquest.com) the wait won't be long.
The last lens I bought from Stephen left California on a Saturday and was in my hands three days later!

You're gonna love this lens!

No, I bought it from OrenMc on the forum. He's making room for the FA31 he scored on eBay.

The Nokton was compared to the A 50mm F1.4 by blende8 here:

What's the cost on the Nokton and is it worth the price, in your opinion?

Cheers.

He's notorious for getting sellers remorse.

I actually had Gary's lens on my camera for at least an hour and a half during the SF walk, it just couldn't seem to come off my camera! Seriously though, it's an amazing lens. The focus ring is so nicely dampened and it was great for taking urban portraiture. Here's two shots I took with the same lens during that day. Albeit, these are B&W and probably not the best way to judge how great this lens is but nonetheless, here they are.

You know me too well Gary,I surely am on this one! An absolutely wonderful lens in all accounts. It won't be long before I have another.
But I think the FA 31 will help with the remorse very nicely. I should have it Wednesday.
