Tamron 18-250mm Yay or Nay?

I'm looking at either this, the Sigma 18-200mm or the Tamron 18-200.

I've got the Pentax-branded version of the same lens. It's a great, non-mission specific, walking around and vacation lens. Just understand that any lens with that long a zoom range will be a compromise. But real-world results are surprisingly good.

There seems to be no disadvantage in going for an 18-250 versus an 18-200 lens - at least not in my experience. All three of the lenses you list have maximum apertures of f/3.5-6.3. The 18-200's don't look any sharper than the 18-250, either. The only advantage with the Tamron over the Pentax is Tamron's longer warranty. But Pentax reportedly has better coatings.

So, to answer your question directly, I say "yay" for the Tamron 18-250 compared with your other choices - but don't hesitate to buy the Pentax version if you find it for less money. Unfortunately, Tamron's newer 18-270 lens with vibration control isn't available for Pentax mounts.

I have the Pentax 18-250. Not a stellar lens by any measure but it is surprisingly good. Certainly versatile as a walk-around. If you're just beginning to build your kit and this is one of the first you buy I don't think you'll be disappointed. I've been buying primes lately but I still turn to the 18-250 for some general stuff...

Get it. I love that lens. Not perfect, but so versatile and good enough for most.

Tons of reviews and topics about this lens on this forum...use your search function, pour a cup of tea and spend all day reading about it. (Also how it compares to the lenses you mentioned). All opinions are still relevant.

From anything I've read, the 18-250 is a newer design with better IQ. Read the Photozone tests, you'll see why people are recommending the Tamron or Pentax 18-250 over the 18-200's.
Early user comments already suggested that new Tamron AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] macro does not only offer a longer range but also a higher quality over the old Tamron AF 18-200mm XR and the lab results confirm these impressions.

I have the Pentax version of the 18-250. I love the versatility, but I would not want a travel lens that gives up any IQ compared to the 18-250.

from all my research, the 18-250 from tammy or pentax is way better than any of the older 18-200 and 18-125 from sigma or tamron.
there is a newer sigma 18-250 with HSM and OS. more expensive. slrgear has a review of it.
after reading these reviews, i settled on the tamron 18-250
