odd lens cap on the Pentax DA 40 f/2.8 limited

film canister? What is this thing you call, "film"?!?

It is "more conventional" alright. But I tried both, and like the film canister lid better. The Pentax cap comes from a Pentax 110 lens.

oh man, that 110 cap looks awesome. I never thought of that. however I think the film canister lid would be a cheaper and more safe option. plus I think a push in cap would be easier to take on and off compared to a conventional cap with the push tabs no? I don't have a 40mm to try myself, so I cant say.

The eBay 30mm caps are only $3 including shipping, almost free. I tried asking for a roll of Fuji film for my K20D, but they just laughed at me and threw me out of the store. Does the Fuji canister work well if there's a 30mm UV filter mounted inside the hood, or does it need to go deeper?

I just tried that out with an old filter and had no issues with the Fuji cap.

Of course. It does what *all* hoods do - reduces flare, improves contrast, and helps protect the lens. It actually does so well with the protection that I rare put the cap on except when putting the camera away for the day.

I bought a couple 31mm lens caps with a snap-on/off feature from an Ebay seller for under $10 shipped to Canada. Maybe I'm fussy but I like the look of a genuine lens cap rather than a film canister lid. I put the precious silkscreened threaded original Pentax cap away for safe keeping.
