If you are missing the mount, that makes it a little tricky as far as repairs go. Eric only lists 24mm -500mm on his site. This weekend, I can try and get you the dimensions for the piece on my 500mm if that will help. You may be able to get a 500mm later and use it with both lenses.

Well, I just compared my "mount" to dadipentak's, and it's quite different. However, the mount does appear very similar to a k-mount (comparing it to the DA 70's). But the flanges (while basically in the same size and pattern) are spaced differently, and the notch for the locking pin is in a very different location--it's inbetween two of the flanges kind of like on a Nikon mount.

I'll post images later today.

I think the seller is a good guy, he was probably just shocked that the lens was missing a part and he would not be able to sell it and it just took some effort to convince him.

Yeah - like I said, I'm glad he was good to you. I feel for him, too. From early 2003 - late 2005 I traded Pentax Gear on eBay and I got snookered both by buyers and sellers once or twice, and I learned a lot about eBay and PayPal.

I also made some pretty stupid mistakes (135/2.5 Bayonet ) - I learned that if I don't know the product inside-out to just not do it.

I’m also getting disillusioned with eBay. A lot of people are selling Pentax gear and do not really know the condition nor the product. Sure you may get the odd bargain from these sellers, but mostly not.

I’m at the point now where I would rather pay 25% to 40% more and buy from a reputable online/eBay camera store. Along with the ones in the USA & Canada, there are some good stores in Germany & Japan. I have never had any issues with these stores and they all know the items being sold.

We also have a Camera store chain in Vancouver that I have found some good used Penatx K series stuff at reasonable prices. There is nothing like holding the lens and checking it out in person before you buy it, they also do layaways!

Phil.

anyone think there's any chance someone machined a Nikon mount for my lens?

The bayonets to fit onto the lens tube would be on the piece. It would be feasible for someone to have done that. Regardless if the piece is missing, you need it.

That does look like a nikon mount. I'd remove it and see if there are m-42 threads under it. I have a heavy pentax k-mount from my discarded tokina 500mm mirror lens. If you think you can use it let me know and i'll ship it to you

Maybe it's the 6x7 mount Ben was talking about?

Yep, I just tried it on a Nikon film body I had lying around. Works perfectly. Very interesting.

I can screw the mount off of the tube, but it's just a huge cylinder with a definitely-not-M42 screwmount behind that. No M42 mount.

edit: Could I just slap a Nikon-F to M42 adapter on there?

The Nikon non AI bayonet and the Pentax k-mount are very similar. If you can mount a similar pentax k-mount, it should work (provided it matches in length)

D.W.B,

That "piece" is the one that I have been referring to. However, yours has been either modified or the bayonet ring replaced if it fits a Nikon. The pre AI Nikon is subtly similar to k.

Edit: I don't know how the K piece is, but the m42 has to oriented correctly before the threaded ring is tightened to keep it from turning. That would mean that if someone did do some machining to get the bayonet spacings to work, all they had to do was orient the piece so that the aperture settings were on top.

Yeah, it fits in the mount on my K1000, but it won't lock (or even really turn)... you have to hold it in place, which isn't really practical for a lens of this size. Definitely a Nikon mount.

This doesn't really look machined to me. Looks like it was a dedicated Nikon-F part that someone grafted onto it.
