Waaaaait... just had another look, and I think it may actually be a M42 screw that the Nikon mount is screwed into (based on nothing more scientific than holding the base of my J-9 up to the Nikon mount and noting that it very nearly but not quite fits inside).
That is the T2 thread (42x0.75), its NOT M42 (42x1), just buy a K mount T2 adapter.

Well, I can't get the F-mount unscrewed from it, so I'd need a T2 mount and then a T2->K-mount adapter, right?

As I mentioned before, a T2 adapter is made up of 2 parts.
If you buy a K-mount (or whatever mount) T2 adapter you get the 2 parts.
The front of a T2 adapter has 42x0.75 thread, the back the K (or whatever) mount.
If you cannot unscrew the F mount T2 adapter, you can take the T2 adapter apart, unscrew the 3 small screws in the F-mount.
Then you must find a K mount T2 adapter which fits perfect over the dovetail ring.
unfortunately not all T2 adapters have the same diameter dovetail ring, so best go to a bigger photo shop, they usually have a drawer of rings, and buy the K mount T2 adapter that fits.

Basically yes. But if the Nikon-T2-adapter is stuck, you can simply unscrew the three set screws, take off the bayonett ring and replace it with the same part from the K-T2-adapter.

Quick and dirty hand-held T-Mount example

I believe the lower, lighter gray "threads" are actually light baffles. There are no set screws around the outside edge of the mount.

Now that we've basically figured out the mount, I'm in conversation with Eric over whether it's worth it to fix the internals.

With the price you paid for it, It will likely be worth the cost to fix it. Granted, that thing isn't cheap to ship, but Eric will likely give you an estimate for no charge. Look at it in the context of a new FA 600mm f4 costing $10K.

Got an estimate from Eric of roughly $60 to fix the internals. Sounds like a helluva deal to me.
