Got an estimate from Eric of roughly $60 to fix the internals. Sounds like a helluva deal to me.
I agree. id jump on that, you aren't really loosing much in the total cost of the lens. it wouldn't make sense to not have it serviced that that price.

I can probably get the seller to refund that much as well, given it was sold damaged.

Update:

I mounted the lens on my mother's Nikon N6006 and it seems to focus well, so the internal damage is simply loose parts unrelated to the actual functioning of the lens. This gives me hope for an uncomplicated repair job.

The seller has agreed to pay for the repair, including shipping to and from Eric's shop.

Pretty pleased overall.

shipping for that beast will probably cost more than the repair.

Pretty much exactly equal, I think! It was $32 to me, but I think I can knock that down a bit with my work-based FedEx rates.

Phil: I looked very hard at that lens.

I'm glad the seller was a stand-up guy about the mount piece. After studying the ONE mount-end photo it dawned on me something was missing.

I sent him a question about the mount - he replied that the offer was what was pictured - nothing more, not really friendly - just a terse reply. My assumption was he knew he was offering a partial lens - the text seemed vague as well - and would use the, "You saw the pictures" defense if questioned.

I can’t believe the seller of the K500/4.5 I bought on eBay, which was missing the mount, has it listed again!

What a jack-@ss. the seller implies all it needs is an adapter when in fact it is missing a substantial part. The seller also implies that you "backed out" without stating that there was a reason.

Yeah, I saw that and wondered whether it was the same one. He's added some "fine print", I guess

if you think he is again reselling the lens with the mount missing, although the ad states it is included, put in a formal complaint to E-Bay.

I would say, the seller keeps the truth in the dark, when he writes "This lens will need the rear adapter to change it from the bayonet your camera body."

I have reported the item to eBay, as seller is not being completely honest about the condition of the lens as it's missing a part. Will see what happens.
