Big Lens Support

FYI I just stumbled across this Luminous Landscape discussion of big lens support issues.

Thanks!

Lens gets here today, so it's time to start thinking about that, I guess.

Well, it got here, and it has issues (no real surprise there).

There's a screw loose internally, quite easily visible when looking through it--it appears to be sitting on one of the internal elements. In addition, at least two of what appear to be o-rings are loose (possibly due to the screw coming loose. Finally, it feels a bit light to me, and when I look through it from either end everything is in focus on the other side at all times. In my previous looking-through-a-lens experience that has never happened--missing internal elements?

On the plus side, the glass I can see looks great, and there's no fungus. The lens barrel is a bit worn, as you'd expect for a piece of this age. I'll try mounting it on my K20D tonight and see what happens.

That lens should have 5 elements arranged in 5 groups. Like this:

No, I suppose not. Sure hope you can rehab it! But it is the 1000mm f8--right?

One other thing...

The removable tube on the mounting end of the lens... there doesn't seem to be a screwmount on it. Just some weird bayonet that's not a k-mount but looks pretty similar to one. Is there a piece missing?

Yes I bet you have the same problem that I had with a K500/4.5 I just bought on eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/SMC-Pentax-500mm-F4-5-4-5-500-Telephoto-Zoom-Lens-NR_W0QQ...d=p3286.c0.m14

I looked at the item photos again after I paid and something looked missing at the mount end. The filter mount is removable and the other end is the k or screw mount. You will not be able to mount the lens without it.

I just got my refund today. You should ask for one as well.

Phil.

Here is a link to the Pentax manual showing the filter mount on the K series lenses.

Seller claims to have mounted the lens before selling it, so I asked him to look around to see if a piece got detached and left behind when he shipped. Not hopeful, though.

He's being very accommodating, at least.

When I get home I'll post a photo of the mount end of mine (but a K-mount is a K-mount--right?)

Well, mine's the SMC Tak, so it should be a M42 mount.

But thanks for the thought.

The rear end also can be changed to accept a Pentax 67 mount. A small quantity of the 500/4.5 was available directly with the 67 mount and even rarer is the single 67 mount part, which was horrendously expensive, when bought separately...

I have the same lens, except I paid a paltry $200.00... That was probably my score for the decade.

As was stated, I think the connection is the filter housing.

Mine is a Tele-Takumar and is certainly M42. I think the rack-and-pinion focus along with the filter coupling would allow for infinity focus with any type adapter, including the flange type. I believe you could semi-permanent adapt that lens.

Yes, it is a freakin' monster.
