yes, the FA1.7. I've never really done a systematic comparison with the FA1.4, which I also have (don't ask!). Will do in October, as the lenses are on different sides of the world ...

Thanks! I'm guessing aperture is 22 or close to it. Shutter open for about 10 minutes and shot on ISO 100 film.

Great shots everybody!

Here are some pictures taken with me Pentax M 50 1.7 during a recent camping trip. This was the first time I really got to USE this focal length and play around with it. 50mm seems a pretty odd focal length to me when using it on my K20.

I've been trying to restore an old M42 50mm f/1.4 takumar and the b*stard won't stop down properly, I pulled the thing apart three times and adjusted the aperture actuating arm twice...at least I'm getting quicker at disassembling the damn thing....

This one gets better everytime I watch it.

Resurgence of the 50s

I wonder if the resurgence of the 50s in this DSLR age, as opposed to the standard zoom that covers the range, is more than just the extra speed of the prime over the zoom. Back in my Canon days (pre LX) I had an 85 f1.8 that I really liked, the focal length was what appealed to me and I am now very close to pulling the trigger on a DA* 55 f1.4 ..certainly if it was not f1.4 I would not spend the money, as I already have the 16-50 and 50-135 but I think a dedicated prime of this focal length will get a lot of usage and the f1.4 is very nice for a brighter viewfinder and those available light portraits.

I like using a 50mm on my crop sensor camera because it still renders faces like a 50mm. The FOV might be similar to roughly 85mm on a FF cam, but the way in which it renders is not. It's a comfortable working distance for me for most uses, and no affordable lens matches what I can do with a Super Tak 50mm f/1.4 in the 30-35mm range on my Canon.

Here's some of my recent shots done with a Super Tak 50mm f/1.4 or Auto Tak 55mm f/2.2. The latter of which is stuck wide open at f/2.2:
