Fantastic example, showing the old Siggi's capabilities to its finest… Handholding such a combination and still getting such an impressive result is an art in itself.

Excellent result Mike.
Proven time and time again that the pre-HSM varieties are optically robust.
The aperture setting for this photo?...

Thanks.

From the Exif:

Camera: Pentax K10D
Lens: Sigma APO EX 70-200mm f2.8 with Sigma 1.4x DG Teleconverter
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 252 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

The focal length was changed to reflect the teleconverter as the Sigma does not report itself as being there.

That is indeed an outstanding result!.

Is f5.0 the effective aperture with the TC, or was it the setting on the camera (therefore f7 effective)?

I took a few test shots this weekend with my combo (same as yours except that my 1.4TC is the old EX, not the EX DG). Wide-open (f2.8 indicated, or f4 effective) it's not nearly as good as what you've shown here, but I think it's good enough.

I would show you folks, but my photo hosting account just expired and it won't let me upload more photos until I pay up. Give me some time to get this sorted out.

Thanks Gerald.
I'd be interested to see your wide open results with the old EX version also - when you've settled your bills .

Sorry Ash, this is very late. But I've started a new thread with some impressions and photos taken with my Sigma (I didn't want to confuse the topic of this thread, which is about the HSM version). If you're still interested, please take a look:

Good work with those Gerald.
As expected - a hard task to get sharp images wide open, but it's a good copy from what I could see.
I wonder at times how effective the supposed technological advances in lens development have been in 'improving' this lens through the years other than just rebadging it, changing the mount materials and reducing the MFD...
