I think that is supposed to be a good lens and that seems to be a GREAT price. Just make sure the glass is ok, i.e. no element separation. Good luck.

If it is the same lens I am remembering, it is call a macro but it really is a close focusing lens. At the price you are offered it is a good deal.

Early Sigma has build and QC issue so make sure you check it out completely before making a financial commitment

I like the one I've had for about 10 years. Color rendition is slightly different than the FA*300, but the slightly faster speed and tripod collar sold me on it.

For me, it's not much of a bird lens, but I have longer better lenses for birds. I've done great reptile and amphibian work with it due to close focus ability. Pretty nice for deer sized critters too. Very hand holdable, though I have trouble with added 1.4X converters--in fact, I sold my converters and use the lens "bare".

With the Canon 500D diopter/close-up lens, it gets to true macro performance, however that accessory costs nearly as much as the price you are paying for the lens.

At the price you are being offered...if the lens is a good copy in good shape, snatch it up quickly. If you don't like it, someone will buy it for that price in the Marketplace.

Found a recent frog image made with the Sigma 300/4 in July. This shot was handheld while sneaking up on the frog during very harsh midday sunlight. No post processing--as shot with a very slight crop for better framing (the frog was too centered as shot). Considering the terrible lighting, I'm pleased with the result...

As noted before, close focus allows for great reptile and amphibian work. I suppose it would be pretty nice for birds in parks where you can approach fairly closely--duck and geese type stuff, or birds at feeders too.

Yeah, buy it!

Hi zmohie,

I'd snap it up if there were no obvious problems. I'd consider it close enough to the DA*300/4 in optical performance (of course, it's a screwdrive, but that's not optical) to not make a practical difference for the great majority of people. Even if you had to take it in for a CLA, at that price you'd still be about $500-700 to the good compared to just about any of the available AF 300/4s out there.

Scott
