Shots from the Tamron 18-250

I've just posted a bunch of shots taken with the Tamron 18-250 during my photo class, and a business trip to New Orleans and D.C. See Flickr: Photos from fortsonre for the shots. I've tagged all the shots "Tamron 18-250", plus I have a set comparing the 18-250 with the 28-300 (non-DI).

6 large sample shots (not fullsized)

Okay, I guess no one else here likes clicking through on links either, so I thought I'd post a few sample shots. If you want to peep pixels, though, you'll have to go to my Flickr site to see the original sized shots.

Handheld, 18mm, f/3.5, ISO800, 1/8s

Handheld, 155mm, f/8, ISO800, 1/6s

Handheld, 55mm, f/10, ISO400, 1/100s

Handheld, 250mm, f/6.3, ISO200, 1/1250s

Handheld (crookedly), 100mm, f/5.6, ISO200, 1/800s - no post processing

Handheld (crookedly), 93mm, f/10, ISO200, 1/320s - no post processing

The vignetting really shows up in the last two shots, but in others it's not there. I purposely didn't post process these two shots so you could see the vignetting. It does clean up pretty easily in Pentax Photolab.

and what's your verdict for the lens comparison?

I had the 28-300 and wasn't that satisfied....
The Sigma 18-125 on the short end and the Tamron 70-300 on the long end were obviously (first sight) better.

???

I like the lens, but don't find that it's substantially better than the 28-300 to me. However, I've read other people that say they think the 18-250 shots look better. You can see a direct comparison of the 18-250 and the 28-300 with no post processing on my Flickr site. Tamron test - a photoset on Flickr

The lenses are essentially the same size. In fact, I put my 28-300 in the 18-250 box while I was travelling and it fit nicely. The 18-250 doesn't have an aperture ring, but I've never really needed one. My only complaint with the 18-250 is the vignetting. It didn't show up in every shot, but the comparison shots really show it. It does clean up easily in post processing, though, so it's not that big of a deal. The 18mm low end is nice, but I found in a week of travel I didn't really use it unless I consciously thought "take an 18mm shot". However, I do think the difference between 18mm and 28mm is much more noticeable than the difference between 250mm and 300mm.

As for comparisons to the 50-200, I didn't do that specifically. I think the 50-200 may be a little sharper, but I don't know. Personally, the way I use all of these lenses (viewing full screen, printing up to 8x10) doesn't really show up any defects, so it's down to convenience to me. Since I already have the 28-300 and it doesn't have vignetting (it's a full frame lens), I've decided to sell the 18-250. If I didn't have the 28-300, then I'd love the 18-250. And like I said earlier, other people have looked at my comparison shots and said the 18-250 is clearly better to them. I guess my aging eyes are an advantage.

There's some colour fringing in Photo 1 (look at the fluorescent lighting). If you need the range of focal lengths, a superzoom can work if you're on a one lens outing. I've not been satisfied with them as the wide zoom range come with some compromises in image quality.
