Problem with 18-250mm Pentax

Hi,

Just purchased brand new 18-250mm Pentax lens. Here is the problem with it.

At the focal length (FL) of 18-70 it works fine. However when I zoom in to 200-250 the lens seem to stop communicating with the camera. It will not focus. It will not set apperture/exposure. If I go back to 18-70mm range it still does not work.

If I cycle the power on the camera it asks me to enter focal length on the display.

The only way to reset the lens is to toggle manual/auto focus switch and manually turn the focus ring while in manual mode. All this with camera turned on. Then I have to cycle the power again.

After this it works at small focal length. However the moment I go to the 200mm it dies again.

Anyone experienced this kind of issue?

I contacted Pentax. They told me that I have to ship the lens for repair at my expense. Is there any way to make them to pay for it?

You might make sure the contacts on both lens and camera are clean. Other than that, I'd return that bad boy.....

After more troubleshooting it appears that the lens is loosing communication with the camera when focus ring is positioned between 7 and 3 marks. Bad lens.
