Help - Deciding on a travel lens...

I'd go for the 17-70 or a fast prime at least 28 or lower. There is a big difference in the field of view between and 24 and 35. And for you own travel shots, I would think you want more of an "eye" view. Whatever you chose, have fun.

I have a different view. I figure that no matter what lens I have on the camera I am going to find something that I want a picture of that the lens is not ideal for. With that in mind, if I could have only one lens with me it would be a prime in the "normal" range. My 31 Ltd is my first choice, but my 40 Ltd or, if I had one, a 35, would be good choices also.

I understand that way of thinking and am happy wandering with an FA77. However, I would not want to so limit myself on a holiday. So add the DA12-24 and a macro adapter for the Limited. Done.

To WMBP: Sounds like the perfect lens for you might be the FA20-35/4 =)

To OP: Last time when I went on my trip (Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan), I brought DA18-55, DA50-200 and FA50/1.4. I did 95% of the shots with DA18-55. I am doing the same trip again very soon and this time I am taking only Sigma 17-70 and will be purchaing Sigma 10-20 from HK =)

Thing is: I'd like to take more of an artistic approach to shooting and I feel that the 35mm can allow me to do that with it's superb IQ.

Can anyone comment on the shots they've achieved with this lens? Usually I would refer to roentarre's website, but he doesn't have it in his portfolio! Guess the 31mm is too close...

I did our trip to England with 2 lenses: Tamron 18-250mm and FA 43 ltd. The super-zoom + fast premium prime combo worked really well for me.

Did you do any PP to boost colour or are those relatively untouched? Wonderful shots btw.

I always do PP, since RAW is only a starting point. But generally (only generally, no real rules) I keep things true enough to the original. I do a little sharpening and white balance etc. along with some basic curves work. Then I look at the image and see what it wants.

The first two shots above have colour curves applied to them. I just like a certain weathered look. I don't remember much about what I did to the dew on the grass... which was in my own garden, by the way.

(I'm not very good at waking up early, but I'm damned good at staying up all night.)

The DA35 is a flippin' amazing lens. If it was 28mm f/2 it would be my favourite.
